Hi new with questions

Hi everyone-
I am new to this board and was hoping to get some insight. I am going to have the weight loss surgery, I have made my decision on that. I am 5' 8.5" and weigh 245 lbs. I am just not sure which type of surgery to have. I was told the highest success rate is with the rouen-y (sp?). I would like to hear from anyone who had either the DS or the Lap Banding and maybe get their thoughts. I am going to make an appt with the surgeon and just wanted some opinions before I make my appt. Any words or encouragement? I have tried diets and have co-morbitities that make weight loss difficult (thyroid problem, sleep apnea, High blood pressure, pre-diabetic) anyone else?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hi new with questions

My best friend had Gastric Bypass surgery 3 years ago- she has experienced nothing but problems since then. You are not that morbidly obese at your height and weight- I would seek a controlled nutrition plan and excersize program to lose the weight- I am 5'7" and at my highest I weighed 230- I lost 74 lbs in a year by implementing a diet and excersize program, drinking lots and lots of water and sticking to it. (I had carried that weight for 10 years so I know its not easy- but it can be done.)

My friend has had 3 surgeries since her GP- to control excessive ulcers, and esophogeal bleeding. She is also diabetic- not a good thing, since she can only eat about a tablespoon of food in an hour.

I would re-think this and get more opinions before you do something like this.

Re: Hi new with questions

Hi , I am about your height and was almost your exact weight , and i too agree that u should not be resorting to gastric bypass because it is a permanent, dangerous risk and for the fact that you are not extremely obese. I know the ins and outs about a thyroid problem from my mother expieriencing it, however, i might suggest to you the South Beach Diet before resorting to surgery. Most people think it is a copy of Atkins high protein no carb, which in reality it is a heart healthy, long term , achievable weight loss system. It is also VERY good at controlling diabetes, and encourages LOTS of veggies and fruits and a healthy balanced nutrition with awareness of what bad carbs and high fat foods are bad for u and make u gain weight. Just something to think about.... good luck

Re: Hi new with questions

You're not that overweight for your height - why would you risk your life by having surgery? The surgery will force you to eat smaller portions. That is something you can do on your own if you just put your mind to it.

Where did you find a doctor that would do this surgery on you?

Re: Hi new with questions

My sister had the surgery. She has lost over 145 lbs, down to 150 lbs. She says it is the best thing she has ever done in her life. You hear stories of failures all over the country. Reason being, there are a lot of general surgeons that are trying it because they see dollar signs. You have to stay away from these guys. Go to a program that has a extremely low complication rate and has done thousands of these surgeries. Not a few. Like where my sister went. St Vincent in Cleveland OH. They have done over 4000. Good luck to you.
