I'm afraid my dad is going to die! - Obesity Message Board

Hi, I need help with my dad. He's been overweight since I was little but he's put on more weight this past year. I'm really worried about him. He's taking pre-diabetic pills, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol pills. I'm afraid he's not going to be around to be a grandfather to my kids. I don't want to offend him I just need some advice on what I can do to help motivate him to lose even a little bit of weight. Anything would help. I hope this isn't offensive to anyone. Thanks so much for any advice!!

Hello Leslie, Believe me this will not offend anyone, you are concerned about your dad and anyone can see that you love him dearly, My dad passed away almost 2 years ago of a heart attack that steamed from diabetes, i'm not trying to scare you or anything but I wished I could have helped him more, you should tell your dad what you are saying in your post and encourage him to do the right thing when it comes to eating and exercising if he's not doing it already, I know he knows you love him and telling him that you want him to get heathier wouldn't make him feel bad it will only confirm the love you have for him, Talk to him, let him know how you feel, and assure him that if he needed help that you will join him, I just prayed and hoped that I could go back in time and did something to help my dad.

I hate to tell you, but only your dad can decide to help himself. I would suggest that you get bold and tell him exactly what you think, that not taking care of himself is leading him to an earlier grave, or even worse, losing a limb (diabetes) or even a stroke that would incapacitate him and he would live that way for years. Mention that you wouldn't look forward to changing his diapers.

But first....

Get the names and amounts of all the meds he's been prescribed. Go to websites that explain the side-effects of the various meds. Some are really frightening. You can use that to help guide him.

Tell him that you wish he would take care of himself, and tell him that you won't speak about this anymore unless he asks you, but tell him to hear you out. It might tick him off at first, but it's only because he knows you are right. Good Luck.
