I have to change

I am 20 and I weigh 308lbs. In the past 5 years I have gained about 120lbs. I can't go on this way but I am embarrassed to ask for help. I am tired and find it increasingly difficult to get around due to my size. My family seem to ignore how big I am and don't mention it which makes it more difficult to ask for help.
What can you suggest?

Re: I have to change

You sound just like me. I have gained 135 in the past few years , mostly due to marriage problems and emotional eating I think. All I can suggest is going to the doctor. I have a appointment scheduled for myself for the same reasons. I also am embarassed, but I have come to the realization that if I don't do something about all this extra weight I am not going to see my kids grow up. Hopefully you have a good doctor that won't make you feel bad. And if they are rude, there are always other doctors! Good Luck!

Re: I have to change

At 20, you are at a great age to make the changes you desire, as your eating and exercise habits are not set in stone, as much as an older person.
Even though it will be hard and you are embarassed, I WOULD start by seeing your doctor. Tell them just what you have said here and that you really want to get started on this. Ask if they can refer you to a wt loss/obesity program.

Also, is there a trusted friend or extended family member that you discuss your concern's with, so you don't feel so alone with this problem, as if no one is willing to acknowledge the wt gain?

Also, have there been any major life events in the last 5 yrs that have caused you to emotionally overeat? -Just a thought, to explore any underlying issues.

Good luck to you and let us know how your doing.

Re: I have to change

My husband went to the doctor to get a Ruen-Y by-pass done. In March when he had the surgery he weigh 376lbs and growing. Surgery was done on March 19th, 2007.
Today he weighs under 200 lbs. His waist size was at least a 52 back then. And 5X on his shirts. He now is in a 38 waist pant and 2X shirt. It works, but it is a life changing experience and you must be ready for that. Check with your medical insurance because it does take a while to get everything in place. Lots of documentation as to what you have done in the past to loose the weight. But it does work. My husband has always been large. Just never as big as he was.
Lots of luck to you!!

Re: I have to change

Surgery is a quick way to lose weight, and after that, you don't change the eating, working lifestyle, it's also gain quickly
I think the most important is changing lifestyle first, move more, eat less junk food. I haven't enough time for exercise, so I put water far from me, when I am thirsty, I have to move my obese body to go there. Instead of sitting and eating snack while watching TV, I stand or go around.

It's funny about my new lifestyle, my sister laughed at me on first days, but now, she just smiles and says "keep on!, bro".

I usually say that my reason to lose weight is to be able to look straight down and see my toes instead of bending over to see them!
Lots lucks to you!
