Depends on how tall you are. Generally it is around 2,000 calories per day. To lose weight you want to aim for about 1,500 calories per day but I wouldn't drop too much lower than that.

Go here to put in your ideal weight, your height, gender and age. It will calculate the calorie intake that is recommended to get to your ideal weight.

There is this really neat computer program called Diet Power, I think it is only ten dollars.

You give it all of your info and it keeps track of your weight and how many calories you should eat every day based on how much you want to lose, you see a daily graph of your progress everytime you open it up.

If you arent losing what your supposed to be losing, it cuts your calories a little for a few days.

And it has a database of thousands of foods (you can add to it to) so when you log a food it tells you how many calories you have left to eat.

Its really neat if you stick to it, you see your weight zig zag down the chart as the weeks go by until you are at your goal weight.

And then it gives you how many calories you need to eat to maintain your weight as soon as you reach your goal.

Generally speaking the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowances) that are printed on most foodstuffs in the UK say 2,000 kcals for women and 2,500 kcals for men

So if you eat between 1,500 and 2,000 kcals a day then you should lose weight at a sensible rate

But I still say that exercise and a balanced diet is better than any calorie/fat/carb/unit counting - it may take longer but your body will be a hell of a lot healthier at the end of it, and indeed during the process

It's all about moderation, and willpower
