Slow and steady wins the race. I had a stroke and I was walking every day (cant now) but when I was walking I use to put a marker on the road and every day I would go two steps farther. It increased my stamina slowly but it was effective. I think your breathing would successfully improve with the same method. Start walking and increase slowly. Your lungs are a muscle too so the will increase in strength as you increase their work out. But do it gradual and build up your momentum. Walking is always the best way to start. Good Luck
