11 Year old son with OCD..please help - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Message Board

I took my son who is 11 to the doctor yesterday. For the past year he has been complaining of constant thoughts going through his head. He tells these thougts to go away and more come in. He can't concentrate at school because he doesn't even hear his teacher because he is wrestling with a full head of thoughs. He is also stuck on the number 8. He has to count to 8 before he can start anything. He also has fears, mostly about someone breaking into our home and harming me (mom). His doctor put him on zoloft 25 mgs. My husband freaked out when I told him since he just heard on the radio that children on antidepressants tend to committ suicide. Any of you have a child with ocd and how are you treating it? I don't have any kids, but I just wanted you to know that you family is not alone. It's awesome that you are getting your son help now and not ignoring the problems. Can he see a therapist?

i think it is great too that you are getting him some help...i think therepy would do him some good, and exposure therepy could really help too

ohh and as far as the suisidal thoughts (if he even ever has any later)....i would just keep the comunication with your son open and if he says anything about it that worries you contact his doctor asap. good luck

I think it is GREAT that you are getting help for your son. I've had OCD since I was his age. I didn't know what it was.....I just thought I worried A LOT! It wasn't until a couple years ago (I was 25) when I had my son, that I lost it. I finally found out what I have. OCD. I always think about how much better my worrying/obsessing could've been throughtout my childhood if I would've know what it was.
I wouldn't worry about suicidal thoughts. I agree with Winnie, keep the communication lines open.
What really helps me, is coming here and connecting with people who are going through the same thing. I hope you and your son can gain some support here. If you ever need an ear, I'm here.
