Heredity ?? - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Message Board

Do most of you know of anyone else in your family or are you the only one with OCD ?
I'M just wondering if I am the only one with this infliction in my family. Did it start with me ? If so how and why ?

uhm, I know of people who I think have OCD, but have not been officially diagnosed. A couple of people actually, but I am the only one with a "condition" because I actually went to the doctor. Of course, they are the only people I have told about this, trying to get them to get on meds. So, if anyone else in my family is as good at hiding it as I am, then probably more have it too.

I can't think of anyone else in my family who has OCD... but now I'm curious. Maybe they just hide it as well as I do!

My Dad has that OCD tendencies in the past- checking under the bed, thinking he was ill, etc.

I'm not sure mine is OCD though, because as I've said before I don't have the compulsions, and my obsessions are all around the same thing. :S but it's definately similar.

I have heard that I had an Uncle that when he was little wouldn't walk on cracks, and would take a long time entering the gate to his yard-going back and forth. I have not heard of him ever being treated for anything or having any symptoms now. I think my Aunt would have mentioned something as she is aware of my situation.

My sister has OCD tendencies-such as she will check to make wure something is turned off more than the average person. And I know she has feelings that something might disappear out of her car trunk??? She has to keep checking things. There are many other minor things she does. But, none of this interferes in her life at all.

I have had my symptoms for about 25 years and at times severely.
