Can you be convinced that you did something you haven't done?

This might sound kind of random, but I am just curious if others feel this way.

I think I can be convinced or talked into believing that I have done something bad, even if I haven't done anything. Like if I was ever arrested for something bad, I believe that the police could get me to confess and make me believe I did it, even though I didn't. Does this make sense? It's like I doubt what I have done and think "Maybe I did do something bad???" I have such a guilty conscious! I went on a job interview and I was going to have to take a polygraph if I got the job, well I was so happy when I didn't get the job! I was so afraid that when I took the polygraph, they would start asking me all of these weird questions about doing bad things and it would show up like I was lying, even though I wouldn’t lie. I would still be doubting my answers. Especially if they said "Are you sure? We know you are lying." I think I would freak out right there. It's weird because I only have doubt about doing bad thing, not good things. Like someone couldn’t convince me that I saved a family out of a burning building or something, but they could convince me that I set the fire. Make sense? Weird.

Re: Can you be convinced that you did something you haven't done?

Hi, ive sort of had this! Once the police were coming round to my house (It was to do with a break in at the church I attend, my dad has keys to get in and since there was a break in they needed to get in) Well they phoned up to say they would be round and I was convinced they were coming to get me! Id made up a story in my head that id been viewing inappropriate material on the internet and they were coming to arrest me! I hadn't been viewing inapporpriate material at all and they obviously weren't coming for me but for some wierd reason id convinced myself that perhaps I had! I even searched my computer to see if I had! Seems stupid now but at the time it was soooo scary!

I always have that obsession. Everytime I go out drinking and my memory of the night is blurry I have terrible fears that I cheated on my boyfriend or that I said something nasty to someone. I totally understand what you are talking about.

yea, i think that any person can convince themselves they've done something that they really didn't... like if you're telling yourself over and over that you saw something, did something, said something... you're going to start to believe it's the truth, whether it is or not! it's like that with a lot of ocd symptoms... like locking the door... i can be 100% positive that i locked the door on my way out of the house... but by the time i get to school and have said "YOU FORGOT TO LOCK THE DOOR" over and over, i really believe that i left it unlocked!
it's definitely a pain in the butt to have these feelings...

When you fear that you have done something wrong can you picture it happening? I ask because this happens to me. That is why it makes me so anxious. The things I worry about are things that I never would want to do but I can picture them happening in my head almost like they are a memory. It scares the crap out of me.

Yes I totally know what you mean. It's like anything you picture on you head, but when it's something bad, then it makes it seem like "Maybe this is a memory" and freaks you out.

What I find interesting is that this only applies to bad things for me. For example, if I picture laying out on the beach, then it does nothing, and I know I haven't been on the beach in a while. But if I picture something bad or frightening, then it feels like it happened.

Re: Can you be convinced that you did something you haven't done?

My ex-husband was so obsessively jealous and accused me of having affairs. One time the accusations got so bad saying I was pregnant and was going to get an abortion. I got so crazy that I snuck out to a doctor and got a pregnancy test done, even though I knew I had not been unfaithful (and my husband had a vasectomy).

Hi everyone!

My OCD centred around exactly what is being described here, and after a blissful few months break from it, it's chosen to come back (hence why I'm doing completely the wrong thing and visiting message boards for reassurance!).

Anyway, to the point! It is DEFINATELY possible for OCD to convince you that you have done something you haven't. In the book 'The Imp of the Mind', Dr Lee Baer says that in this 'style' of OCD, it isn't that people can remember doing something awful that keeps them obsessing, it's that they can't prove they didn't that feeds the cycle of endless doubt and 'what if's'.

He also gives mention to Episodic Memory (the part of the brain that re-creates past events in your head), and says that when not being able to recall the past with certainty, combined with that feeling of not being able to prove that you didn't do something occur together, it is terribly upsetting.

He then says that many of his patients can actually 'see' images of the bad things they fear, in a very realistic and upsetting way, and that a colleague of his who did studies with visual imaging said that when we form an image of an event in our minds, we are using the exact same part of our brain that we would use were we seeing the event for real, hence why these 'memories' we get are so frightening and realistic, and therefore checking these memories over and over again can actually harm our memories of what we did and didn't do because it becomes increasingly more difficult to seperate fact from fiction.

I hope this is helpful, and I also hope that Dr Lee Baers Lawyers don't sue the pants off of me!

Much Love

S
