Finding a therapist?

I'm finally at the point where I think I can admit to myself and my family that I believe I have OCD. Now, I figure the step after that is finding a therapist who can assist me through meds or CBT, I suppose. I was just looking for some input about what the best way to find an appropriate therapist (psychiatrist I'd assume) in my area would be. Should I talk to my doctor about it, or go directly to a therapist? If the latter is recommended, can anyone recommend a good directory in which to search for therapists? Thanks a lot!

I would say talk to your family doctor first. He/She can sit with you and really help you out. I've gone to many therapists over the years, and the best one I've gotten was thru my PCP.
It's hard though, cause a lot of times you have to pick a therapist based on who accepts your insurance. I hate that.

Finding a good therapist isn't always easy, and can be limited sometimes by where you may be located. I would suggest the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation. They can provide you with a list of specialists in OCD. Also, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America can also provide a list of some specialists. I would try to contact either of them if you have any trouble. Good luck, the good news is that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and/or Medications have been proven to work and really help OCD and other Anxiety Disorders.
