Can anybody tell me what medication has worked well for them for OCD? Also, I have a nephew with OCD who is going through a very hard time after his girlfriend broke up with him, it has been months and he is still obsessing over her. In the meantime, he has gone to a therapist twice, the first time the doctor told him that what he was feeling was normal, and to come back if he still felt this way 3 months from now, the 2nd one put him on meds., and these are not helping much. They all send him on his way, and he has no insurance, two visits cost hundreds, one to tell him he was feeling normal, the 2nd to tell him he was a bit anxious. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated. He is now on his 2nd med. and his family is at a loss of where to turn or what to do, as he is barely better at all.
Thankyou for all of your suggestions. My sister is very gratefull for your help and is coming here herself and also I am telling her your suggestions in the meantime.
Is this the only symptom? It may be depression, not OCD, but his psychiatrist should know...anyway, Paxil and Seroquel work well for me, with valium for emergencies.
I am the mom to the boy Kamden is writing about. There is some depression in there, but he does have some OCD that has been there for quite a few years. It was always under control on it's own (excessive handwashing was his only compulsion, and obsessions were short-lived) but since he lost his girlfriend he is obsessive about the situation to the point of analyzing it constantly (2-1/2 months now). He has improved, but is on such a low dose of Paxil (10mg) that we think he may just need more to feel even better. He has a doctor's appointment tomorrow and we'll see what he says. Thanks for your input!
Wow! That *is* a low dose. Upping it could help...just be aware that at first it usually makes symptoms worse...my psychs gave me ativan to take in the mean time, but then, I have very severe OCD. Good luck!
