My God Think My 6 Year Old Daughter Has This Plz Read! - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Message Board

Hi,

I have suffered myself from ocd for a number of years mainly bad thoughts and straightening,touching things. I would not say it has had a particular impact on my life but it has been ther and I have been aware.

These past two days I have been absolutely distraught to find my 6 year old daughter behaving in a very ocd way! At first it was her socks,NONE of them would feel comfortable or 'right' and I would get very frustrated and usually end up shouting at her to leave about the 10th pair we'd tried on! Now this is the really worrying bit,She has constantly complained the last two days of her hands feeling 'sticky' Now yesterday she was in and out the bathroom insisting on washing them and applying talcum powder. Today she hasn't seemed to worried about the washing but wont hold or touch anything that could make her feel 'sticky'.

She wanted an ice lollie earlier today I took one from the freezer handed it to her and under no circumstances would she accept it unless she had something wrapped around it so nothing would touch her hands,This is very odd behavoir for her,She also refused toast because of the Crumbs! She got very frustrated and cried!

I am petrified for her I feel hopeless! I am typing this tears just streaming down my face, I don't know what to do or where to start. I don't think my nerves can handle much more really I already suffer anxiety etc myself Could I have made her this way?

Don't blame yourself for that! You are not at fault. Yes, mental illness has a clear genetic component, but you can't help that. Nor do I think you made her that way by your own actions. It does sound a lot like she has OCD. If she does, this could really interfere with her friendships and her education... many things. I would get her evaluated ASAP. The earlier you catch these things and get them treated, the easier it is to treat, and the less suffering you and your daughter will experience. You can bet she is currently not happy!

I can only imagine how you are feeling now. I am not an expert at all in OCD, but my friends daughter had similar issues as you describe your daughter has.

What they found out about their 5 1/2 year old daughter, was more about a "sensory" syndrome. (Not the exact name). Her condition of concerned about the way things feel had to do with a very sensitive "sensory" issue. It is hard to explain, but it was more in the Nuerology family and a compulsive issue.

I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, I can contact my friend and see if they can give me a more percise answer for you.

Sorry, I don't know much about this from a personal point, but your post caught my eye because I saw a Dr on a TV news show about children with OCD and you may want to check out P.A.N.D.A.S. The info may be of help to you or maybe someone else.
