Newly diagnosed...is there anywhere to commit myself?

Hello, I have been diagnosed with OCD, which it all makes sense now. But, it's so bad that I am on supplemental security, barely able to function, going to school taking one class, getting over a 100% and still freaking out. I feel like I am a danger to myself and need to be committed somewhere...however I am not suicidal...where do I go for help? I have been to the ER over 6 times in the past 6 months...

I am seeing a psychiatrist/ psychologist and they are doing all they can, but I can't take this anymore...help me

-TonyaM

Hi. What is 'supplemental security?' Do you live alone? Are you on any meds for your OCD? Whilst I sympathise with you because when you're in the midst of a bad attack ocd is horrible to live with, the stories i've heard from people who've been committed aren't very nice.

Tell us more about your OCD. What do you do that makes you barely able to function? Do you have any family that can support you while you get through this?

I don't know where you are from. But Mass General Hospital (in Massachusetts) has an amazng OCD program. It's a live in program for @ 3 months. I haven't used it, but I have read WONDERFUL things about it. You can easily find it through google and read about it. It's not like a regular psychiatric ward. This is a program for people with OCD who are not responding to medication or therapy. From what I understand, it is widely recognized as an outstanding program. Hope this helps.

Yeay, I am not sure where you are from either, but I am from Long Island, NY - and they have a great place, Bio Behavioral Institute, - in Great Neck, not in patient but they have Cog. Beh. Therapy and can end up placing you in patient. Do you have family that can support you? Why have you had such bad experiences with in-patient? Is it the staff or they just can't regulate your meds?

Re: Newly diagnosed...is there anywhere to commit myself?

Tonya,

I am very sorry for your suffering as I know what you are going through. I seriously thought of checking into an OCD clinic at UCLA. Dr. Schwartz who wrote the book "Brain Lock" works there and from what I read it has helped a lot of people. But I live in Denver so I couldnt go because I need to make $ for my family.

My best advice is to find an OCD support group in your community who can help you. They are probably tuned in as to where to go.

Ask your Dr about Xanax in helping your anxiety. You will get better soon.
