asbestos OCD

anyone have this? mine is driving me insane i've not got long for the looney bin.i think its everywhere in my house because my dog occassionally scratched a cement asbestos panel i'd used to patch up my backyard fencing for 8 years.i'm showering hours a day ,i cant use my washing machine,i barely sleep and refuse medication as any drugs scare me(addiction ect)if i think i've even touched a wall ,i have to shower excesively,i'm like a prisoner to in my own home. if anyone else has this and maybe sought out some non hysterical data or weblinks about asbestos and its dangers without the scaremongering please get back

Re: asbestos OCD

Sounds like your OCD is at the point where you should try to find some expert help. Ask your doctor to recommend a psychiatrist who specializes in OCD. Or maybe your doctor can just give you a few names and you can call them and ask what their specialties are.

Also, reading books about OCD can be helpful.

I hope you find relief soon.

Re: asbestos OCD

FINALLY! ive found someone who has the same problems as my mother. we had an asbestos pipe removed 6 years ago (when i was 13) and it took up to now to de-contaminate the house.

Last week, as small section of the celiing fell in due to 25 years of wear and tear, (a pretty routine job to fix), and its started all over again.

Even though i do not suffer from any OCD symptoms myself, i still know everything about the disorder and understand every aspect and my heart goes out to anyone out there who has it.

Im just happy ive found someone else to do with Asbestos OCD rather than the more common ones that are on the Internet, like locking doors and washing hands etc.

If anyone gets back to me about it i would be very, very greatful. Just anyone to talk to who properly understands it. Im 19, i go to university, and i also run a business, which will probably mean me moving away from home in the near future. Im the only one who has been through it with her and ive helped her the most - so what happens when i move away?

Thankyou.

Re: asbestos OCD

I didn't think anything would come of it as this thread is ancient. Therapists can be good, my mum has had several but none of them really worked, and shes had psychologists but they don't seem to do anything either. Hypnotherapy is what shes trying at the moment, but as it all works on the subconcious mind it might take a while to see how it goes, and its £60 an hour (which is about $120), so its not something that we can just keep paying for.

Brake discs are a big thing for my mum aswell. If the car is going for a service or to be fixed, it takes her weeks to get back in the car because she thinks the mechanics might have asbestos dust on them.

Today we had the ceiling fixed, and as it contained asbestos, there was a bit of drama cleaning everything up.

Do you feel ashamed by what you have? Because my mum has told only about 3 of her friends in the last 6 years as she says she's ashamed by it all. I reckon it's better to get it out there more in the open, (not shout it to the world) but treat it as just an ordinary illness - because basically thats what it is.

Re: asbestos OCD

OCD89,

I'm still around. How did your mom deal with/clean the house after the ceiling work? I find that I have difficulty getting ahead of it sometimes. Once one thing gets contaminated, then even the slightest possible contact with it being touched to another room or wall makes me feel that I have to completely clean the other surface as well. It's pretty frustrating. I realize that the transfer is minute if even measurable, but just the idea of it puts me in a panic.
