Can Hypnosis cure OCD?

I was watching Maury and there were people on there who were scared to death of ordinary things. They were then hypnotized and afterwards they weren't afraid of the things they were scared of anymore.

So I was wondering if this could possibly help mine and other's OCD.

Any ideas?

Re: Can Hypnosis cure OCD?

Ski-

Well, in the past alot of people have employed many different methods to cure OCD. Some have excorcisms, (as silly as that sounds, I've seen it done)some go through hypnosis, others go through ECT, but most people see a cognitive behavioral specialist and use medication in conjunction with that good therapy. Right now, that's the most effective way to battle OCD.

There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of hypnotism on everything from smoking to phobias, and unfortunately the jury is still out on whether or not hypnotism works. I suppose if you want to try it, it can't hurt.

Some other members have had some very useful tactics to battle the symptoms of OCD, and these are some of the ones I like to employ:

1. Distractions like listening to music or playing video games.
2. Meditation is very helpful.
3. Reading a book.
4. Deep breathing and relaxation.
5. Vigorous excercise like biking, hiking, or even a brisk walk.
6. Writing in a journal.
7. Self talk. (ie. I can win, I can battle my OCD, OCD is just thoughts,
thoughts cannot hurt me.)
8. Seeing a good cognitive behavioral specialist to talk about different
strategies that will work best for your OCD.
9. Light amounts of different SSRI medications.
10.Talking to others that have OCD.

Hope this helps!

Re: Can Hypnosis cure OCD?

I went to a hypnotherapist and I got my first (and probably biggest) panic attack half way through. He said that the bigger the problem, the more sessions it'll take.

But, if nothing else it was a lovely experience because he was genuinely nice and wanted to help. He also explained a lot to do with the brain, and a lot of it made perfect sense. He also offered reassurance at a time where I thought I had skitsophrenia (sorry can't spell it).

I plan on going back there soon.

Don't just think he puts you to sleep straight away. You have a good long heart to heart first so he can build up a profile.

I found it relaxing at the very worst, everyone should at least try it once.

Angry Re: Can Hypnosis cure OCD? NOOOOO!

hi.
I used to have OCD.and i went to see a hypnotherapist.Hypnosis is a waste of time! You have a cemical brain imbalance.Only medication can help (like Paxil) for instance. You need to have your hormones checked. expecailly Tsyroid.Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation wich makes your body release natural forms of morphine and dopemenine. They'll make you feel good but won't help you in the long run. There is nothing wrong with you spiruatly or psychilogicaly.I had OCD ,i don't anymore.I have a hormonal imbalance wich caused a chemical (neurotransmiter) imbalance. You need a Psyciatrist to perscribe you proper medications.DON'T WASTE YOURE TIME WITH HYPNOSIS!

Lucas-

Well first off, let me say that I'm very happy that your OCD is gone. You obviously found the right balance of medication that works for you. What you're not taking into account is that each person on this board is unique, and none of us are the same. We are, however, all here for the same reason.

I would ask you kindly that you don't knock what other people employ to help them with their OCD. If someone finds that hypnosis decreases the symptoms of OCD, then they should continue pursuing hypnosis.

While I will recognize the fact that in some cases there are certainly biological factors that can contribute to OCD, most professionals will agree that this is not the only reason.

If your argument were true, that all OCD is caused by chemical imbalances, why isn't there a pill that cures OCD? If your argument is true, why do people that take medications still experience symptoms of OCD? If your argument is true, why can our primary care physcians not find anything physically wrong?

I've had EEGs, EKGs, blood work, and thyroid all looked at, and I'm perfectly healthy. So, if you're argument is true, there should be something physically wrong with me, but there isn't.

Re: Can Hypnosis cure OCD?

Hmmm...Has skicat left the building?

I tried hypnotherapy back in the '70's.
I was too anxious to allow myself to be hypnotized.
But I think the problem with using hypnotherapy for OCD is that it would only work for specific phobias, not for the underlying causes (like chemical imbalance). Still, it seems like hypnosis could provide relief from some long-term, maddening obsessions.
Also back in the '70's, my mom's best friend when to hypnotherapy sessions where she listened to tapes for a few weeks. She hasn't had a cigarette since.
