Wow, I began reading this board just for fun, because OCD seemed like an 'interesting' subject to read about (I just joined the forum
).
After reading peoples stories about their rituals and compulsions, I realized just how many of these I seem to have (in some form or another).
My worst example has always been keeping things even and symmetrical. This has moved around, everywhere from blinking, to typing (ugh, I type pretty fast, so this was annoying), to arranging other objects like books or chairs or even my poor cats. XD I actually get over any sort of movement compulsion pretty easily, since it usually devolves into a rhythmic tapping to a beat I know (I play clarinet and tenor sax, so I never run out of songs
). I've even found that, with the urge to take a certain amount of steps or to step for a certain distance, I start walking to a beat.
I also used to have what I still think is the strangest feeling in the world, the urge to just move something until it feels right. This never really bothers me unless I'm leaving from home, because I'll stop for a minute or two just before leaving to adjust something, and then I'll feel like I'm forgetting something (but I usually am, so that's halfway justified >_>).
Anyway, after typing all that, I've kind of lost track of where I was going with this. Do I really have OCD? I can't remember the last time I experienced the 'intrusive thoughts.' I know I have, but it's extremely rare, and could just be the byproduct of some sleep loss (it's 1:00 A.M. as I speak-er, type). But then again, so much of it explains all of these random little things I do.
I guess my question here is what do I need to about this? Is treatment necessary for OCD; if so, what 'breed' of doctor do you need?
On a side note, I'm leaving for 5 days to San Francisco tomorrow, so don't think I'm gone just because I'm not posting. ^_^
