Hi Johnii,
I just started taking Clomipramine to augment my Lexapro. From my reading, SSRI's like Lexapro, Paxil, etc. are the first line of treatment medication-wise for OCD. From my reading, I also have read that it takes at least 2-3 months with an SSRI before you will notice relief of OCD symptoms if that particular drug works for you. Have you tried other SSRI's? Did you give them 2-3 months chance? The dosage of SSRI also generally needs to be a very high dose, higher than that used to treat depression.
My doctor gave me Clomipramine because supposedly, it can possibly have effects faster than the 2-3 months on SSRI's. Clomipramine was one of if not the first medication approved and beneficial for the treatment of OCD. Others can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think it is technically an SSRI. It is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant....hence the different time frame before it starts to work.
I'm on a very low dose 50mg because it is supplementing my Lexapro temporarily until hopefully the Lexapro takes effect and helps. I think typical dosages for OCD is 100-250mg for Clomipramine (brand name Anafranil).
At my small dose, I haven't noticed any change in my symptoms after 2 weeks. It may be because the dose is so small, or maybe I need to give it a little more time.
Hope some of this helps.
