Bad habit

I have a bad habit of picking at the skin on the roof of my mouth. I'll pick at a skin flap at a certain area when I'm nervous. I'll keep picking at it until I break loose a piece of skin. I know, it's awful. I can control myself from doing it in public, though often I'll get a strong urge to pick at it while in public. I've heard that this could be OCD. I'm being treated for depression. COuld it be related to this? Could medication help it? I'm already taking Lexapro. I don't see that there are any really bad effects to come from the picking - I just want to stop.

Re: Bad habit

Maybe you can mention it to the doctor who prescribes the Lexapro the next time you see him?

Is it the only compulsive habit you have? How disturbing is it to you?

Re: Bad habit

It's the only habit I have, though I used to have trichotillmania (hair pulling). I did that in my teens, then I stopped and did it some when my depression started a year ago. The picking habit isn't very disturbing, though I worry about that area getting infected since I can't leave it alone and let it heal. I just don't like not being able to have control over the habit. I don't know how or even if it can be treated. I meant to bring it up to my doctor at my last appointment. I don't see him again until Aug., but I'll definitely mention it then. From what I understand, anti-d's are supposed to help with this kind of thing, but I'm only taking 5mg of Lexapro.

Re: Bad habit

Yeah, for OCD often stronger doses are needed than for depression to have a significant effect. it really depends on the person though.
Sometimes also the medication somebody takes for depression is not hte same that works for OCD in a particular person. I have heard of such cases anyway.

How have you overcome the trichotillomania?

Do you have any kind of mouthwash you could use to disinfect the area?

Re: Bad habit

The urge to pick just went away. I thought it was a teenage thing because it started in my mid-teens and ended a couple years later. I started up again around the time I was diagnosed with depression. Now it's like I switched from that to the mouth picking.

Yes, I use an anti-bacterial mouthwash every night. The concern I have is that with my mitral-valve prolapse (a heart condition), any infection I get in my mouth goes straight to my heart. The infection is more dangerous with me because that valve doesn't work properly. It used to be that people with MVP had to take antibiotics before teeth cleanings because they worried about gums getting cut and infection occurring from unclean utensils. However, they're not doing that anymore because I guess the risk has been proven to be very low. My doctor says it's not necessary but my mom's Dr. still insists on it. She has an appointment with a cardiologist because she's been having chest pains, and plans to ask about the antibiotics, if it's needed, and about my picking habit. I've been doing better today, though I went through a spell when I got upset over something. I think when I'm idle and worrying over things is when it's worse, so I plan to put my retainer (my orthodontic night retainer) in at those times. I typically only wear it at night, but wearing it during the day helps me because it covers up the roof of my mouth. But then I notice I'll move onto pulling my hair. Luckily, the trich isn't severe - some women get bald spots from plucking so much.
