OCD can very well be treated. I wouldn't even say that it is not possible to "cure" it... I mean, what is cure anyway, and to what extent are SOME what-if thoughts or whatever normal... ok, here's what I know: Medication and/or cognitive-behavioral therapy are successfuol for OCD, and in my opinion it is not just a temporary controlling of it (as long as you keep the treatment up), because in fact your brain changes. With medication it has been said that if you stop the meds, it is very likely to come back... but not necessarily, because see, your brain gets USED TO operating in a different way (you use different neuronal pathways, and those paths become "trampled down" better, they get carved in more... and especially with behavioral therapy, you can actually train your brain to use different pathways, and while at first it is a struggle (and that's where meds REALLY help!!!!), it gets easier and easier.
Once you experience that the fear decreases without doing a copmpulsion, it gets easier and easier every time.
Have you been diagnosed with OCD? What you describe could be OCD or also what it called "generalized anxiety disorder". Do you feel you have to do certain things to relieve the anxiety, or think certain things, or are you trying to avoid thinking certain things?

p.s. I admit in my case I decided to stay on medication because my insurance covers it and I don't have any side effects... My recovery was dramatic and wonderful. |
