Fear of Rabies
DATE: September 12, 2010
I just wanted some advice:
Me and my 6 mth old dog were playing around in the yard when she grabbed my pant's leg. Usually she likes to play tug-of-war w/ clothing, wagging her tail. Well, she was doing that. The problem was when I turned and she tried to get more fabric she nicked me on the back of my knee. I felt a tight pinch and she let go. I went inside to look at it and it was a red mark, like a big pinch. I checked it and there was no blood or abrasion. It was just red and painless. After cleaning it with alcohol wipes, a long soak of hydrogen peroxide and even a natural cure we use in India, I lathered it with anti-biotic ointment and kept it covered. I knew I did right but I became apprehensive...so we went over to my neighbor's house, whose a specialist doctor. He looked at it and we had a discussion of my pet's medical history: she'd been vaccinated in full, given her first rabies shot at 4mths, or during her spay surgery (at the shelter we got her from). He, a long-practicing doctor, said that it was VERY unlikely to get rabies, especially when we haven't taken her outside of the yard since we received her at 4mths of age. He recommended that we go to the doctor at our earliest convenience and get a tetanus booster "just in case."
What I want to know is should we have gone to emergency? When I tell the doctor what happened, am I going to be given the rabies shots immediately? I have big OCD about getting rabies...I wash my hands every time the dog touches me, and even change clothing, etc. I just want advice so I know I'm not alone....p/s: In the valley in California, what are the risks and likeliness...thx
