Re: Compulsive Tongue Biting/Picking
I have been picking/biting the side of my tongue and biting my cheek for the past 6 or 7 years. Now, I bite/pick the left side of my tongue more prominently. I don't know why! When I bite the pieces of tissue off my tongue (& if it's a decent size) I take them stretch and squish them w/ the beds of my fingernails. I have tried getting fake nails as to deter myself from picking my tongue (thinking that it would be difficult to grab the thin layer of tissue...but I found a way to still do it!).
Anti anxiety medication did not help this behavior; in fact I think it made it worse. I totally can relate to becoming focused on this behavior, especially in cases where I'm in my car driving or sitting and watching T.V.
It is also very satisfying. Biting my cheek and hearing the sound of my teeth biting down on the tissue and opening up the bit makes a satisfying sound. Now, I am one of those type of gum-chewers who like to snap her gum solely with her molar teeth.
I have never gone so far w/ the clippers. Once I feel that my tongue starts to hurt (because I've picked too much) I am able to stop. But in the end it makes it worse b/c if I stop for a couple days the build-up of new tissue just makes it easier (and more satisfying) to pick again!
So, I don't know what it is about this oral fixation but I am relieved to see that there are others out there like me!!! (Hugs)
