Hello, I have been posting a lot on the Autism board about my 4 & 1/2 year old child. I am not quite sure what the diagnosis is for him but they are testing him for Fragile X, unfortunately there is no board here for that. His symptoms are so much like Autism and in my search for information on Fragile X I kept finding myself linking to sites about autism. Anyway I guess I was wondering if anyone was going through a time with their child where they definitely know that there is a problem but nobody seems to know what it is. Sometimes I wonder if the doctors are taking me seriously or not. I went to my family doctor when my little guy was about 20 - 24 months old with concerns that he was exhibiting some autistic characteristics, I was given the "brushoff" if you will and told he wasn't autistic and not to worry..... well now he's in nursery school with frustrated teachers because he won't comply and is very different from the other kids.... doesn't socialize with them, prefers to be alone, and has obsessions about certain things. My family doctor recently told me that maybe that's just the way he was and I might just have to accept that fact. I didn't like that very much, he is very bright, has a very large vocabulary yet he can't carry on a conversation. He somewhat attempts to start conversations but they don't always make sense, he will start talking about something that happened but there won't have been any direct reference to it: for example, today while in a doctor's office (a doctor for me, not him) he was asked by the nurse if he went to school, and he rolled up his shirt sleeve and said "the doctors' not supposed to poke me, I told her no". He was referring to a blood test attempt at a lab about two weeks ago. Obviously this thought must have just popped into his head, but he didn't even seem to realize that this lady just asked him a question.
