Post Face swells

My face swells at odd times for several hours. This happens when I least expect it, usually at night. This month it swelled on the right side of my mouth one night and the next morning it swelled below my nose and lip. It may not swell for another month or it may happen tomorrow. I never know. The dr. says that it is nerves. How do I control it? Any suggestions. I am trying stress relief such as music, a form of yoga, breathing etc. Is there any other help? It has done this for 5 yrs. but seems to be more often. Thanks Sarah

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problem. It's not related to your teeth at all is it?

If not, then your doc is possibly right. Do you have a stressful job? You may not feel stressed, but it can manifest physically in lots of different ways and you may not even know it.

Yoga is a very good exercise for stress relief. Also, I would suggest some internal martial arts such as Qi Gong and T'ai Qi. These are very good for emptying your mind and grounding your energy and making you feel fresher.

A Qi Gong exercise that I find very useful is as follows-

Sit on a chair, preferably without arms and keep a straight back. Take your shoes and socks off, so that you are connected to the earth. Yin energy comes from the earth. Curl the tip of your tongue so that it touches the roof of your mouth and place both your hands, one on top of the other, or so that they link over your lower belly. Just sit and empty your mind and become relaxed and then notice that your breathing gets deeper. If you notice your mind wondering, then just slowly bring it back and re-focuss. Whilst doing this, you may start to feel hot all over and it may produce a feeling of warmth in your belly. This is normal, so don't worry. Try this for our 10 to 15 minutes and you should feel totally relaxed and grounded afterwards.

In Chinese terms, there are what are known as the three Jiaos. The Upper Jiao is in the chest, the Middle Jiao is under the diaphragm and above the belly button and the Lower Jiao is below the belly button. It is also called the Lower Dan Tien and it is where the Qi is housed. This exercise builds the Qi in the lower Dan Tien, so that you feel more energised, but also calm and grounded too and can then focus on the tasks that you have to perform without feeling stress.

This is a simple, but very effective exercise and I have found it very helpful. There are others, but I would take up far too much space on this board if I was to describe them.
