Unhappy problems with swallowing saliva

hello.

well since a while already, i have been having this annoying problem when i swallow saliva. is nothing like it hurts or im unable to do it. but its because everytime i swallow saliva it make this annoying noise when it seems to be going through the throat.
it doesnt happens all the time, but i decided to ask for help because this last days it has been really constant and i'll tell you why its so ANNOYING(i know i repeat the word a lot, but thats how i feel, annoyed).

well the noise it does its pretty loud and i know its a problem because i dont hear anybody else doing it. for example the other day i stayed to sleep with my girlfriend in her house. when we just decided to sleep and everything was silent, it started to happen. i felt the need to swallow saliva like constantly. like if my throat would get dry fast or something. and each time i would do it, it would make this noise. you can imagine how embarrasing it is when EVERYTHING is completly silent. oh by the way i didnt heard my GF having my annoying problem, so i know its something with me.
another example would be today on school, i had a test and everything got completly silent and i started freaking out because i was feeling this sensation really a lot. each time i would swallow saliva it would make this pretty loud noise in the middle of the silence and its so damn annoying, because its constant. i actually had to leave my class and go to the bathroom for a moment, because it was getting so embarrasing. and i was so mad that this little thing is modifying my daily life!!!!

i have been thinking about what can be the cause. maybe is that my mouth dont produce enough saliva, or maybe the opposite, it produces too much!. maybe my throat gets dry too fast, or there's some element that my mouth should produce and it doesnt. i dont know but i am desesperate!!!!!

i am a very, very social person and i have a great positive mood always. but this problem is making me completly antisocial!!!. it is so embarrasing for me that sometimes i dont want to be with people or like with my girlfriend when i slept with her, i didnt want to be close to her because i thought i would disturb her. i mean you get the point that this little thingy is making my life a hell!!. i even have a class in my school when we do a couple of minutes of meditation and everything gets completly silent and i get really tense!!. and all of this results on a general bad mood, and not wanting to be with people!!!!etc etc.

well actually i would be so embarrased to tell anybody about this in person that you people are my last hope!!. anything you can tell me i would greatly aprecciate!!.

thanx in advance!!

ps: i am 18 years old, and btw english is not my first language so forgive any disaster i could have written

Does your throat get dry (if so, how often)? Is it redder than usual? How old are you? Are you used to this occurring all the time, or is it recent. Is there pus in the back of your throat? Do you have difficulty breathing? I donít know what the problem is, but Iím trying to see if it might be an infection. It could also be that you donít get enough water. Another possibility is that your voice is changing. If you feel sick (fever, stuffy nose, etc...), you should see a doctor. Make sure you get plenty of fluids (water, juices).

thanx a lot for your reply.

ok let me reply by parts.

"Does your throat get dry (if so, how often)?"

well my throat dont get exactly dry, but i do feel the need to swallow saliva without too much time in between. i believe that the time i need to do it is way too often and not normal.

"Is it redder than usual?"

nope. my throat looks ok and i am not sick or anything like that.

"How old are you?"

almost 18 years old.

"Are you used to this occurring all the time, or is it recent"

i believe i started getting this feeling when i was like 15 years old. before that i had never thought about the action of swallowing saliva, it was completely automatic.
one day i was in school and i felt some difficulty swallowing and then it never was the same again. i mean, the difficulty was just that day, but now i get the problem i described above and swallowing is not an automatic action anymore. every time i do its like harder than what in my opinion should be.

" Is there pus in the back of your throat?"

nope, nothing.

" Do you have difficulty breathing?"

nope.

about feeling sick etc etc, i really dont. i feel perfect.

i was thinking that also it could be like phsicological. i mean, i might be tense or something and my throat gets tighter than it should be and that makes it difficult for the saliva to go down and produces that ANNOYING noise.

but thats just an hipothesis.

anyways the problem is really serious for my life and i really need help. if you guys dont know what it can be maybe you could give me some advice for going to an specialist(i dont know what my problem is so i dont know where to go )

anyways thanx a lot and i'll be waiting for more replies!

bye bye

Cool

manuhts:
I agree that we can obsess over anything and then get anxious about it. I think your swallowing is normal and that perhaps you could drink more water to make your saliva smoother, but that you are normal. It seems like you may be self-conscious over your normal body processes...I used to be that way myself. I used to try to be utterly silent at night. That isn't very relaistic.

A fact is that we cannot think of two things at once. So, when you feel you must swallow, tell yourself some else rather than dwelling on anxious thoughts.

For instance, you can tell yourself "it is normal to swallow, I can relax". Do this every single time you need to swallow. After awhile, you will forget about being anxious. It may take a couple weeks of making a deliberate choice of what to think about before you begin to realize you are not thinking about swallowing noises.

Cool

hi man -
do your ears seem blocked? i have allergies and i often have the same propblem. when my ears get a little plugged up i can hear myself swallow and it does sound very loud to me but no one else can here it. it's worth a shot. i would also think about telling your doc what you told us.
have you had your tonsils out? they can cause that kind of sensation also.

hope you get an answer soon.

and i do agree with the possibilty of obsessing about it. i do when i get real bad.

Thumbs up

wow great replies!!! thanx a lot guys!!

actually and thanx god, this last days i havent been feeling this so badly. that day i wrote my message in here i was getting so desesperate!!!!.

anyways i find this so interesting

"I used to be that way myself. I used to try to be utterly silent at night. That isn't very relaistic. "

that happens to me too!!. at night when im sleeping with somebody else nearby i try to be completly silent!. i dont know why is this.

i guess my problem is actually psyichologic because when im very distracted and alone i never even think about swallowing, but when i get more paranoid is when im in a place with people and things get SILENT!!!. i start thinking about it and thats the problem i believe.

but i truly dont know how to fix my mind

guys thanx a lot again and it would be interesting if you have some strange mental thing like mine just tell us in this thread, what you think??

bye bye!!!
