Safe to take ibuprofen this long? - Open to All Other Health Topics Message Board

I am an 18 year old. I have been sick since Sunday afternoon with a high fever (the highest is 104), chills, and starting yesterday, some minor flank pain (not all the time). I went to the E.R. last night, and all the tests came out normal. I like Children's Motrin, and it seems to work better for me than Tylenol (or at least it works faster). How long is it safe to keep taking ibuprofen? My fever has ranged from 98 to 103.1 today.

I take 2 600mg ibuprofen a day. (I'm allowed 4 a day). I've been doing this for years. You need to be careful because long term effect could cause ulcers. I haven't had any real problems yet but on occasion start to get stomach problems so I'll take some pepcid. Check with your doctor or pharmacist because everybody's body is different.

Also, if you take ibuprophen with food or milk, your stomach is more protected.

Tylenol is very effective for fever.... but Motrin does have an anti inflammatory agent in it.

Make sure you DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS so you do not get dehydrated from the fever.

When you fever is low grade you should let it run it's course as this is your body's way of fighting whatever it is that is making you sick. Low grade would be anything UNDER 101 orally or tympanically (ear thermometer). Also remember that if have just had a drink of something hot or cold you cannot take your temperature for at least 5 minutes orally. Taking the ibuprofen since Sunday is not bad so long as it isn't upsetting your stomach. Just use good judgement and do not take it if you temp is low grade as you body does need to fight whatever illness you have.
