TETANUS SHOT, do I need one? - Open to All Other Health Topics Message Board

Hi. I did a very stupid think yesterday. I had my cross stitch out and instead of putting up the needle when I was done, I just poked it in the arm of the couch figuring I would remove it later. Well, I forgot. So, I was walking across the living room and tripped and fell into the couch. My hand went right down on the BLUNT end of the needle and it went in soooo far. I immediately pulled up so it came right out, and it did bleed a bit, but nothing major. Well, today I wake up and it is a little bruised around the area and the tendon, nerve or muscle (not sure which i hit, but I did hit something) is VERY sore. The pain goes all the way up to the tip of my pinkie. Should I of gone to the dr? I got a tetanus shot about 12 years ago, so it really wouldn't be sufficient anymore. Am I overreacting or should I go to the dr?

If I were you, I would see a Dr. if the problem does not go away within a couple days or if a lot of redness, swelling or pain persists. Dn't know if you need a shot but possibly some antibiotic creams or pills. You should try and put some neosporin on the wound area to promote healing.

You can always call your doctor and explain what happened and see what he/she has to say about seeing you or not.
As for the Tenanus shot those should be redone every 10 years.

Usually they recommend tetnus be done every 7 years but some may go longer than that. The suggestion to call your doc and speak to his nurse is an excellant one as she will talk to your doc and call you back with what he recommends you do.
