Chronic Yeast Infection in Throat - Open to All Other Health Topics Message Board

Hello.
I am a 19 year old male. About 5 months ago, I had painful white patches in my throat, which turned out to be diagnosed as a yeast infection, or Candida. After taking three medicines prescribed by my ears, nose, and throat doctor, most of it cleared up. But I also refuse to go back to him because it is becoming costly. Now, sometimes the yeast comes back, not as white patches, but as redness and rawness throughout my throat. My mouth is also very dry when they come back. I smoke about half a pack a day, and drink alcohol on the weekends. But other than that, my diet has virtually eliminated all processed sugars, and have been eating very well. I'm not on any particular diet, and yeast sometimes is part of my diet. I have been taking acidopholis for a month or so, but it does not completely eliminate it. And very recently, I can feel a strange, but slight pain in my ear. The ear is on the left side of my head, which is the side where most of the redness appears in my throat. I have been going insane with it, thinking it's a tumor, or that I have cancer, but refuse to read into it any futher, and hope that it goes away. I'm sorta stuck and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas or opinions on the matter.

What was the ENT problem you had the meds for? Maybe it's not completely gone?

Taking acidophillus is good to keep the bowel flora balanced while taking antibiotics. They're definitely good to take daily anyway.

I have asthma and from my corticosteroid inhaler I tend to get yeast at the back of my throat. I used nystatin....but I don't like swallowing it -- hurts my stomach.

I saw a posting on the asthma boards that suggested to take an acidociphillus capsule and empty it in the mouth and letting the stuff dissolve and then swallow it.

I do it morning and night after I brush my teeth. It's kept it down quite well. I've had to double up on my inhaler meds because of a cold and have noticed it's creeping back again.

It's not drugs, doesn't do any harm and is affordable. I still take them in full capsule daily too.

Viral infection can also affect the ear and its nerves -- herpes being one of them. Do you/have you had a breakout of coldsores lately?
If your gland just under your jaw near your ear is swollen, that means you're still fighting whatever it was that you had. If the gland is swollen, you might be feeling some referred pain. I use a microwave grain bag to help ease the pain. It works well, in conjunction with Tylenol. At least if the pain is somewhat eliminated, you won't have to focus on it so much.

p.s.... you could be allergic to your cigarette smoke -- it would be healthier if you quit, at least till you're feeling better.

Yeast loves alcohol and the smoking is known to be bad for irritation of mouth and throat linings. Sounds like it's time to give those things up for a few months. You might want to consider taking nystatin pills for a month to be sure the fungus is gone. When the redness comes you should also have a throat swab done just to be sure it's not bacterial in nature.
