Angry Headpain, Sore Throat, Dizziness.... ETC, No clue as to what it is!!

[SIZE=3][FONT=Comic Sans MS]
Hi, this will be my first posting on this site, but I am desperate for advice. I am a 19 year old college student in my first semster at UF. About four weeks ago, I started to have pressure feelings on my head, as though someone were squeezing my entire head, and it felt like I was sitting still, but the room was moving a little. It was a pulsating pain, and at times it felt as though I were shaking and got so bad that I thought I might pass out. It also felt as though I were on an airplane the way that people sounded to me, and how I sounded to myself.
I saw a doctor who prescribed Lamisil, which supposedly cures a yeast infection of the middle ear. The first two days of the pills, I felt almost 100% better, but after that, some symptoms returned, not as bad as before though. I felt like I still had pressure in my head, and felt like it was behind my nose, cheekbones and forehead. My left ear would sometimes feel very hot, but it was never warmer than the other ear. My throat was also sore, especially in the morning making it difficult to swallow.
I saw the doctor again, and he prescribed an antiboitic, the name of which I can't remember, but it is a cousin to penicillin. I took 4 pills a day for about 4 days. The symptoms lessened, but as I took the pills, my ears began popping and crackling. My face still felt full of pressure in the beginning, but finally lessened. It has been a little over a week since I completed that set of pills.
Now, I have been feeling the slight dizziness I felt in the beginning at certain times of the day that usually doesn't last very long. I still have the sore throat and what feels like mucus draining in the back of my throat. My ears still pop and crackles almost all the time, and sometimes quite loudly. I have been having headaches that localize around my temples usually, but sometimes in the forehead over my eyes. Other times the back of my head feels very tender and hurts occassionally. Over Thanksgiving, I would feel suddenly very tired and as though I couldn't stand any longer, but after I ate a meal, or drank a glass of water I would feel more energized.
I have no fever, no vomiting, but occassional nausea when I am very hungry or right after eating. I am able to breathe through my nose most of the day, except right before I go to sleep and when I wake up in the morning. I have no idea exactly what is wrong with me, and if someone could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for bearing through the long explanation

Your symptoms sound to me like positional vertigo which is an unfortunate side affect of having any type of infection of the inner ear. I went through it myself a few years ago. Yes, it can frighten you out of your mind when you first get the weird sensations you have described but it goes away within 3 days to a week after treatment. You may need to get back on that medication or try an antibiotic (which is what I had to take).

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

I absolutely understand your symptoms! I have been going through a very similiar phase as you for the past two weeks already. My medical doctor had prescribed Amoxicillin to me last week because she thinks I have some ear and throat infection. I am feeling a little better, but still have the light headed feeling and been sneezing. I know this isn't just any cold, but something else. I too am still trying to figure out what's wrong with me. It might also be because I had switched from Ortho TriCyclen to Orth Cyclen and was forced to stop taking it just recently because I will undergo surgery the end of this month. I just want to feel normal again. Keep me updated on how you are feeling cause your symptoms are very similiar. Take care!

The pressure on your head sounds like from sinus pain (especially behind ears, cheekbones etc.) which often occurs alongside normal flu or cold symptoms and can be very painfuld and debilitating

Was the Dr. you have been seeing a Ear Nose and Throat specialist. This is who you need to see if you havn't already. There are tests they can do to get down to the problem.

Good luck

hmm... you felt tingly, the only sensation i get that's out of the ordinary now is the occassional lightheadedness, headache like pain across my forehead and on the back of me head and my constantly popping ears. Should I still see a ENT specialist, or will this all go away without pills?

I don't think that this is a cold or flu, because I have not had a single fever, or thrown up. I feel nauseated every once in a while when I am really really hungry but other than that the feeling is just annoying, and the headaches are kind of painful. I am not congested accept when I wake up, but I have the postnasal drip almost constantly making it difficult to swallow. I also have the popping ears. Will this run it's course, and go away, or will it get worse without more medication? (I was on a realitive to penicillin but not amoxicillian)
Thanks for the advice in advance!!

You don't have to feel nauseated to have a flu, and you don't always have to feel/be feverish with a sinus infection. A lot of the time my nose is not at all congested (unless I've been lying down for a while) when I have sinus trouble, it's just "behind my ears", on my cheekbones or my forehead that I get sinus pressure.

I've read on the NHS direct website that antibiotics often don't help with sinusitis but you'd have to look it up to be sure.

I tend to get sinus infections after almost every cold/sore throat etc. I have, I used to have chronic ear and tubus infections as a kid which I got rid of by having my tonsils removed but it's still a weak area so any small infection always goes straight there!

Usually a course of Sudafed (Psudephedrine HCL [sp?]), a decongestant specifically used for sinus congestion and some versions also for sinus pain (and available OTC), sorts this out, but have a word with your doctor with regards to sinus infections if you're not sure.

Actually, antibiotics are a GREAT way to treat sinusitis! The most common sinus infections in adults are streptococcus pneumoniae (about 70%), other strep species (about 10%), and staph aureus (another 10% or so). Specific treatment depends on the particular organism you are dealing with, but first line antibiotics are almost always amoxicillin, penicillin, and erythromycin. Decongestants like Sudafed may be helpful, but they won't take care of the sinus inflammation. Beconase and Nasocort are both anti-inflammatory and decongesting, but you need to go to a doctor for them.

Although this sounds like sinusitis (lack of fever), the symptoms are pretty general and the list of possibilities is more than can be tackled on an internet forum. Best to see your physician if you're still feeling lousy.

I hope you feel better soon!!

I've just checked and they've updated the information now (it's been 3 years since I last looked!), stating that the reason why antibiotics aren't given often is because "your doctor may prescribe you antibiotics but they penetrate the sinuses very slowly and you need to take them in high doses for quite a while"

i was shivering all weekend and took my temp - i had a high fever of 102.7. i realized i got hit with the flu. i was cold, weak, lightheaded, and no appetite to eat anything. its weird though cause i just had a flu shot and it was my first time having it and yet i still got the flu. i still have some kind of ear infection as well as a sore throat because when i swallow, both my ears and throat don't feel normal. i hate being sick. i haven't gone to my doctors office yet cause it has been snowing here in jersey the entire weekend. hopefully my doctor can take me in tomorrow and prescribe me something. this weekend i have been resting, drinking green tea, and robitussin flu. i feel horrible. i can't wait to feel like myself again. how have you been feeling lately?

Actually, I've felt a lot better, except that I still have the ear popping, but the lightheadedness comes less frequently now. I have found that I've been tired lately as well. I hope that you feel better soon as well, and I hope that the rest of my symptoms subside as time passes.
