Hi Paul,
I had gallstones and had the laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery a year and a half ago (I was 22). It wasn't bad at all, and I went home from the hospital the same day. It is possible, I've heard, to have the pains recurr after the gallbladder removal, but I haven't had any. Some people say that they have a harder time digesting fatty or spicy foods afterward and tend to get diarrhea, but I haven't had these problems either. I feel great now!! The scars are teeny (one small one that looks like a piercing scar in the bellybutton, 2 that look like mosquito bites, and one that is about 1/2 an inch long. And the recovery time isn't bad at all: I was doing heavy farm labor about a week after! So...Don't worry about it, it's no big deal!!
In the meantime, eating as close to a no-fat diet as you can possibly manage and avoiding spicy foods will prevent you from having attacks. It's almost fool-proof.
Good luck.
