Can incorrect pencil grip cause hand problems in longrun? - Open to All Other Health Topics Message Board

My mother recently pointed out to me, that I am holding my pencil incorrectly (thumb-middle-pencil rests on ring finger)...so after 25 years she finally noticed

Well, my five year old is holding a pencil as I do. I was told this is wrong and the pencil should be (thumb-index-rest on middle).

Am I the only one? I have good handwriting and haven't had any pain.

But is there a longterm problem that can occur from "incorrect" pencil grip? (that's if it's even incorrect) Cause if there is I would change my son's pencil grip.

Hi rosemarie,

I tried your way, and to tell you the truth, it puts less stress on my hand.

It's your natural style of holding a pen/pencil. I don't think there are correct ways, and it won't cause any problems unless you are writing all day. And if you were writing all day, you would have just as many problems with the "right" way.

The days of forcing hand writing positions are long gone. The slap on the knuckles with the yard stick or ruler probably hurt more than a lifelong time of writing.

Besides, using natural style when learning anything is the best way to go.

I find it interesting the different styles people use while writing or drawing. When I worked in a school, I noticed the styles were quite diverse.
