MRI questions

Hi,
I will be having an MRI tomorrow and I had a couple questions. The MRI is of my brain and cervical spine-about how long will I actually be in the scanner? I am a little claustrorphobic, so I'm a bit nervous about it. Also, I have a permanant metal retainer on my bottom teeth. I was just wondering how this would effect the results. My Dr. said it might cause some blurring of the images, but since the metal is in my mouth would it effect the view of my brain/neck?
Thanks in advance for any replys.

Re: MRI questions

I had the exact same mri that you are having about a year and a half ago. It wasn't that bad. I had contrast solution with mine in an IV in my arm so I was more nervous about that. The test takes maybe half an hour. At mine they offer to play music for me, but I decided no. It is a very noisy machine with lots of clunking and grinding noises. They said that's what it's supposed to do. They put things over your ears and what resembles a catcher's mask over your face. It's important to lay as still as possible when they say to (usually when the machine is making noise). It's hard to move anyway with all that stuff on your head. There is a squeeze bulb panic button that you hold on to also so if there's a problem you squeeze it and they can talk to you through a microphone and get you out right away. Don't worry though. It's the easiest test I've ever had to have done and I've had a lot of those digestive tests. Just relax and take deep breaths. Close your eyes and think about good things.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply. I will also be having it done with contrast, but I've had just about every ounce of blood drawn out of me over the past 6 months so needles don't bother me too much anymore.

I was worried because they told me I would be there for about 2 hours. I'm glad to know the actual scan will only take a half an hour or so. I feel better knowing what to expect.
Thanks again,
Hilery

Re: MRI questions

I hope I didn't give any wrong information to you. I know I wasn't there for two hours though. There are several questions to answer and forms to sign and fill out ahead of time, but I know the test is in segments like they'll say this portion will take 2 minutes. Then it will stop and then they'll say something like this is the longest segment and will take 10 minutes, etc. These are just examples. I know my total time on the table couldn't have been over 30 to 45 minutes. And it's not scanning the whole time. Needles don't bother me either, but usually what they put in the IV that makes me nervous. I've had lots of IV's with hospitalizations and GI tests. I didn't have any problems with the contrast dye though. A little bit of warmth in my arm was all. Good luck. I hope everything turns out okay for you.
