Unhappy Jaw Pain! What is it?

For about 2 weeks now I have had pain on the left side of my face only. It doesn't hurt when I'm just sitting here. Only when I move it. It's right under my ear, the back of my jaw toward my neck, up to my temple. It's mainly where the upper and lower jaw hinge together.

At first I thought I was getting an earache because this is usually how I feel the day before I get one, but it's been a long time now and I don't have an earache and I don't know what it is.

It hurts to chew and I can't bite down completely. To lay on it or to sneeze hurts also. It I jerk my head really fast, it hurts. I can't open my mouth completely. It kind of locks, unless I force it open and then it clicks.

It really is starting to bother me cause it hurts to eat and it isn't going away.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be or what's wrong? I would really appreciate your opinins. Thanks guys!

Re: Jaw Pain! What is it?

It sounds like a classic case of TMJ. You should see your dentist for advice.

I wouldn't doubt if it was TMJ. I got it too and that is how mine started, mine also hurts when I lay on the bad side. Try taking Aleve when it hurts. That is what my doctor recommended. If it gets extreme then you might want a referral to an oral/facial surgeon to help get fitted for a mouth piece to wear if it is bothersome at night.

Soft diet, gel cold packs, limit movement, antiinflammatory, night guard as suggested. Could be tmjd. Cavity or other dental problem? Don't force a crack if you can avoid it. Once I went to take a bite of a hero (those rolls are too big), heard and fealt a crack-ouch! That was the end of that meal. Do you have allergies?

Re: Jaw Pain! What is it?

Thank you guys for responding. I actually took some Aleve for the first time this morning before work and before reading your posts and it hasn't hurt as much today. I still can't open it though. How do you get TMJ? I read something about how young girls in their child bearing years are the most likely to get it. That's me. Why would they be more likely? How do you get rid of it? Is it forever?

Re: Jaw Pain! What is it?

I wish I had answers to your questions. An ent noted the crepetance/clicking in my right tmj and thought it tmj so went to a dds, had a night guard/splint made (upper). Do you passively clench or grind your teeth? That can make it worse. Keep taking the anti inflammatory to reduce swelling and for pain. Cracking it is an injury to that area, I remember that and it was not fun. It may be a good idea to have your jaw filmed so they can check the joints condition, function and help you.

Re: Jaw Pain! What is it?

There can be lots of causes of TMJ disorder. I got mine from clenching my teeth all the time. If you want to learn more, there is a TMJ board on this website.

I would suggest you see a doctor before it gets worse. Unfortanetly, most dentists do not know much about TMJD, so you should see an oral maxillofacial surgeon, or even better, a TMJ specialist. In my case, I told my dentist about my jaw pain and he had never even heard of TMJ disorder.

Also, insurance does not generally pay for treatment because they don't consider it a real disease. In my case I also procrastinated seeing a specialist and had to have surgery that probably could have been prevented. I am not saying this to scare you, but this is serious and can have a lot of side effects. Hopefully if you do have TMJD it will not be severe. Just don't let it go for long. I wish you the best! Take care!

I have mine possibly from an overbite or getting hit in the jaw. I have read that people who's teeth dont line up tend to get it.

To start your own thread, on the very first page of a particular board, on the upper left, just above where it says "Announcement. Green underlined words in posts", you'll see "New Thread". Click there. You won't find this on a page where there's an ongoing thread in progress...As I said, you have to go to the beginning page of the board in question.

There's an Addiction Board on this site which sounds like a good place for you to start.

Good luck.
Come back here if you can't find it.
