light-headedness or dizziness while sleeping

I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction for my problem.

I had my gall bladder removed about 3 years ago. Ever since I have had episodes where I am asleep, but wake up with a feeling of light-headedness as though I am about to faint (or worse). The problem first arose a few days after surgery, and now I can have the episodes once or twice a week, but sometimes not for a month or so.

I can't seem to identify any particular triggers. My family has a history of high cholestrol, but I'm in pretty good shape and exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet.

I'm thinking it may be a respitory problem like shallow breathing or hyperventilating, or something like acidosis.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
