That is pretty low. Some companies have a hire/fire at will policy, varies on state, if your state is like this might not be much he can do about it. I would call the EEO and file a complaint or see if he has any options about it.
Does his company have more than 100 employees? If so he is also eligible by law for FMLA.
It just makes me sick when companies do things like this, especially the smaller ones because they often times think they can get away with it. The sad part is because he is having surgery he may not be able to collect unemployment, you'll want to call and question them.
