Hypocalcemia - Can Anyone Help

My wife has Hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) following a surgery for having Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels due to a parathyroid gland that was overproducing the PTH hormone). The surgery was supposedly successful, but her calcium levels dropped and she became Hypocalemic and we've been trying to figure this thing out and how to treat it. She now has to deal with virtually no uninterupted sleep ( barely a few hours a night) constant cramping and tingling of her feet, legs and arms, memory loss and panic attacks. We're hoping to find people who've been able to find a balance in how much calcium they ingest or inject, what kind and in what form, and a schedule of when to take it. Unfortunately for us I'd changed insurance from a ppo to the dreaded hmo and have had to deal with limited help and no follow up from any doctor. If anyone can give us a direction or some answers, we'd really be in your debt.

Re: Hypocalcemia - Can Anyone Help

I only have a suggestion. There is a must that a specialised doctor follows calcium level of your wife untill normal levels are riched and stay stable. There is no way that you alone or with online help could figure out the right scheme. Maybe you will find a doctor who will be willing to advise you without paying too much. Maybe who of your frieds know somebody...I've heard that calcium level problems are rather rule than exception after parathyroid removal and it just take some time to normalise. So maybe there will be no need to take extra calcium on long term basis.
