Spontaneous Black Eyes

This summer I've had four black eyes -- three in the past three weeks. Before this summer, I've never had a black eye in my 45 years.

The black eyes seem to appear without cause. They appear right below the lower lid and last for about a week. Three were with my right eye and one was with my left.

They don't really hurt. I feel a little irritation the day before they're visible.

Could they be allergy related as allergens have been very high this summer?

Could taking too much ibuprofen (Advil) be a cause?

Is this a symptom of something else?

I would appreciate any ideas. Thank you.

Re: Spontaneous Black Eyes

Lois,

Most black eyes are the result of trauma that causes bleeding beneath the skin. A skull fracture can cause black eyes, but in that case both eyes are usually affected.

Since you haven't experienced any trauma or head injury or such, and these "shiners" seem to come and go, it sounds like you probably have an allergy or allergic sinusitis where you can get darkening under the eyes caused by inflamed and engorged blood vessels.
