knee injury....need help..wont go to DR, they will just tell me i cant play

Hi
Ok i am 16 and a sophmore in high school.
Last year i hurt my knee during a basketball game.
This is how the story goes:
I was go to the basket for the lay up and a girl came and hit me from the side and i could feel my knee/kneecap go from side to side. I fell down and started screaming of pain. My coach carried me off the court and had me ice it. i iced it when i got home then the next morning i tried standing up and my knee was stuck in like a 90 degree angle. i couldnt move it. i tried streching it both in and out and it hurt so bad. so i got to school and coach tried getting me to go to the DR but i know they would just tell me i cant play so i wouldnt go. well it took a day or two to for me to be able to play on it. but then it would give out all the time. like i would be dribbling the ball and i would just fall down because my knee wouldnt hold me. about a week after that it filled up with fluid.
well now its a year later and the fluid is gone but comes back once in a while. But my knee still gives out. Sometimes i feels like there is nothing holding it there, like its just floating or something. Can you help? I really dont want to go to the DR unless i know there is truthfully something really wrong with it. Im very dedicated to my sports and it would kill me if i couldnt play them.

Re: knee injury....need help..wont go to DR, they will just tell me i cant play

Well, if you do not go to the Dr.i can almost guarentee you that you will never be able to even walk correctly at some point in the very near future.it sounds like you could have torn cartlidge and or the ligaments that are inside the knee and are responsible for the stability in your leg.this is not a good situation.i am suprised that your coach would even let you play.Don't you have to take a full physical in order to be able to play sports in school?i would think that your doc would have a very hard time in releasing you to play any sport considering the condition of your knee at this point. This is NOT just going to go away,it will only get much worse and become extremely painful as the inflammation takes its toll.it really does appear that you indeed DO have some sort of structural injury that needs medical attention. If you go to the doc and be prperly treated you stand a much better chance of being able to play sports than if you do nothing. You have probably caused much more tearing and injury to your knee when you started playing on it again.Ths will only get worse not better.i am living with horrid levels of pain in my knee right now due to the wear and tear and damage that was done over the years. It finally caught up to me.My damage is so bad right now that there really is nothing that can be done to help.I am in constant pain 24/7,it never goes away.Trust me hon, you do not want to end up like this.It is hell.talk to your mom and tell her whats up here.I am rather suprised that she has not taken you to the dr to have this checked out by now.you need to have an MRI done on that knee to determine the extent of your injury.Because you DO have one from what you have described here.I am not telling you all of this to scare you,but to just inform you of what could happen if this is not treated properly. This could end up crippling you at some point without medical intervention.Talk to your parents today so they can call your doc on Monday to get you looked at.Take care hon, and please do this.Marcia

Thanks...ok well I did go to the Chiropractor a couple of weeks ago and he didnt even take xrays. He twisted it a little(i thought i was going to die) but then he told me that it was just a bruise. I felt like saying "so your telling me I've had a brusie for a year now." Brusies just dont last a year long!
Oh yeah and like after a game it is really sore. i do wear a brace that the chiropractor gave me when he told me that i had a brusie. that was another strange thing...why would you wear a brace for a bruise?

Re: knee injury....need help..wont go to DR, they will just tell me i cant play

He probably felt the instability in the knee and figured you needed it.Also, if he did not even bother to take an x ray of the knee before he started dorkin around with it, that is NOT good. This chiro quite obviously does not know how to treat knee injuries. He would not have been my first choice of type of Dr to see regarding this. You need to get things rolling here with a trip to your main dr.He/she will most likely do an immediate x ray to see if there is any real noticeable structural damage, then the next step would be an MRI to see what is going on with all of the ligaments, cartlidge nerves and blood vessels. This will give the best overall picture of what is going on inside the knee.Your doc may also send you to see a good ortho surgeon, not always just for surgery but for a total medical evaluation of your knee. The ortho surgeons really do know the most about treating knee injuries.some can be helped by physical therepy and some may require surgical intervention.Your mom needs to call tomorrow and make an app with your primary doc to get this all started.Your doc will then decide what he/she thinks is the best way to handle things.good luck Allie,Marcia

Try seeing a sports medicine doctor. They understand that you want to have a knee that you can play on. Especially at such a young age. They may recommend surgery, which would keep you out for a while, but ultimately you should be able to play again. Think about the long-term function of your knee and not just playing right now. Good luck.
