i was 32 when i had mine removed ( a year and a half ago). my experience was not bad. please remember....TO DRINK, DRINK, DRINK!!! The drier your throat gets, the worse the pain gets. So ALWAYS have a cup of water in your hand or at your bedside. Keep your throat moist at ALL TIMES. If it hurts to just think about swallowing....DRINK ANYWAY..the true key is to keep the throat moist. do not drink cold carbonated drinks..as it WILL BURN!!! anything salty, or warm/hot will burn as well. if they put you on narcotic pain meds....TAKE PLENTY OF FIBER, AND STOOL SOFTENERS...EVEN BEFORE THE SURGERY....get them in your system real good!!!. Narcotics have a BAD affect on your bowels...no one told me....I learned the hard way....and thought I would never get cleaned out!!! I was more miserable from being severely constipated, than from having the tonsils removed!!!!!!

I was born with large tonsils, which were never a problem.....then all of a sudden, I started choking on everything from saliva to foods. After severely choking on a hamburger, and honestly thinking I was going to die from choking....I got scared enough to schedule an appt with my ENT that day!!!!! After the tonsils were removed, he found SEVERE infection...they were full of pus and were swelling more as each day passed...which is why I suddenly had the choking spells. My condition was called "cryptic tonsillitis". (Silent infection....once it has gone on for so long, symptoms show up...but by then, it will be hard to get the infection out, and the potential of dying from suffocation is high...as the swelling will cut off your airway)
