I am a mommy to a 2yr old and a newborn. 2 months after giving birth the second time, I have started experiencing numbness in my left hand (pinky, thumb, and those corresponding sides of my hand). Occassionally I also have numbness on one side of my left foot. It isn't a complete numbness. I can still feel. Just a slight numbness. I am baffled as to what could be causing this.
~Misallignment? Constantly have sore shoulders and back. My 2 yr old is heavy and I have been lifting him frequently. Also, I have noticed that I have been sleeping with my neck contorted at night. Don't know if this is the cause or not/
~I really don't know what else is causing this. I fear a tumor, MS, or some other malady.
Any insights? Any similar experiences? Any insight is appreciated! What can cause such numbness??
I had similar numbness but also severe pain a couple of years back. I had a herniated cervical disc and bone spurs. Often, numbness or tingling in the hands can be caused by a cervical problem. Maybe sleeping with you neck turned funny is causing it. I'd try heat/cold packs (whatever feels best) for the neck and something like Motrin, if you can take it to relax the muscles. It will probably get better on it's own but if not check with you Dr. and see if he might recommend a stronger muscle relaxer or some physical therapy. If you're not having a lot of pain, I wouldn't worry too much at this point. Congratulations on your new baby!
This could indeed be a possible nerve issue somewhere up in the C spine.what is odd though is that the pinkie and thumb being affected would indicate that there could be a problem in two totally different areas.each finger kind of correlates with a different nerve up in the C spine. The pinkie is correlated to the C 8 nerve while the thumb would be more up the spine to anywhere between the c 4 5 6.Because of the heavy and repeated lifting of your children you could be irritating a nerve or nerves up there.or muscle tension can also affect the c spine nerves.Women generally experience much more tension problems in their neck and upper shoulders than men do.for some reason, women 'carry" their stress in the upper back and neck area.if this gets worse or pain becomes a problem,I would suggest a trip to your doc for an evaluation and possible x ray to see if any vertebrae are out of allignment. If nothing shows, you might have an MRI to really see just what is going on inside the vertebrae with the nerve roots and other stuff in there. It could be anything from a pinched nerve to a herniated disc,so it is really best to actually get a good look. The very first thing he or she might try is some form of PT to try and loosen up those tight muscles.this in itself may actually solve your problem.just make an appt with your doc to get this all evaluated.Hopefully it is nothing major.please keep me posted on just what you eventually find out,K?FB

I have the same problems but mine involves my right hand more then my left and it is pretty much my whole hand and once in awhile I will get the pain in my shoulders and neck. They did a MRI of my c-spine and found that I have degenerative disk disease, I asked how this could happen as I ma only 32 and they said mine was from having so many children and being so small framed. All that extra weight I would carry when I was prego did a number on my spine. I also went in for a nerve test but am waiting for the results of that.
if your only big issue is DDD, the results of the EMG nerve study will probably come back normal.Unfortunetly an EMG will only pick up definite nerve impairment or damage of some sort.not always with degenerative problems.although you can be having some really intense pain the EMG does not always tell the reasons why.an EMG test picks up on just how well the electrical current runs through a nerve to the brain.it will only show abnormal if that current is being blocked by damage or impingerment by a herniated disc or bone spurs....i have DDD throughout my spine but the worst is up in the c spine and it can and does cause some pretty severe pain at times.Do you actually have a copy of that MRI report yourself? If not,you really need to get a closer look at it to see just exactly what the radiologist found there.in most cases of DDD, there are other issues going on in there as well.and docs do not always tell you everything about just what is actually in the rad reports.trust me on that.you should ALWAYS get copies of any sort of testing that has been done on you just to keep for your own records.Espescially if you have some sort of chronic condition. This really helps alot if you should have to go to the hospital for treatment of a sudden change in your condition. If you actually have any sort of test results with you, you will get much better treatment as they can use the stuff you have as sort of a "baseline"to tell if your condition has deteriorated when compared with what youare being treated for now.i have one huge flippin file going on with all of my medical issues.FB

Mommy2tots,
I have had problems something like you discribed only it's in my leg & feet. They call it
neuropathy. There is more than one kind. I'm older tham you, meaning I'm passed child bearing age, but if this persist, I would go to the doctor. This could be simple OR
if it continues, be a back problem that you don't want to have.
