Diabetic ulcer and swollen feet

I "had" a diabetic ulcer for over a year, thanks to the amount of incompetence I found in the medical field. Finally, with the ulcer the same size it was the year before, I visited a wound care center. My foot HEALED IN 6 WEEKS !!!!!

While the ulcer was present, there was a tremendous amount of drainage from the wound AND the foot was always swollen. Now that is has healed, the swelling has not gone down (healed for two weeks). Am I expecting too much too fast? I am walking around on the foot very gingerly (total time each day - perhaps 30 minutes) but spend the rest of my day sitting (sore butt now). My toes have also taken on the "hammer toe" appearance and this has me very concerned. Oh yes, I have also developed "drop foot." I am doing foot exercises for the drop foot condition but am at a loss over the swollen foot - just one foot too. Any suggestions??

Paul

Re: Diabetic ulcer and swollen feet

paul i'm not sure of what to say but i would follow up with dr. i have diabetes but it is diet controlled and i don't seem to have any complications at this point. i see a podiatrist every 3 mos. for routine diabetic foot care just to play it safe.

Paul,
Try contacting the wound clinic, there are compression stockings such as Ted hose that can help reduce the swelling. You should also have your doctor refer you to physical therapy for the foot drop, they can develop an exercise program to help you gain back as much function as possible.
