For about 4 weeks now, I've had a cut on the corner of my mouth that spans a few millimeters into my lip and a few millimeters onto my skin. I don't even remember how I got it... shaving maybe? It scabs up and reopens on a daily basis. I was using Aveno chapstick until it ran out; now I'm using a a Neosporin cold sore ointment. I've also tried Vaseline and plain chapstick. Twice or three times now it has healed to the point where I could open my mouth up all the way and nothing would crack or hurt, but it's reopened one way or another each time. I've been applying some form of ointment to it at least 5 times a day for the last few weeks with no luck. I'm starting to think I need stitches or something. Any suggestions?

Keeping ointments on the cut may be preventing it to heal.

You might try letting it dry out, keep mouth closed except for drinking liquid foods/drinks with a straw, maybe Ensure or other. Every time you open your mouth it will pull on the cut and reopen it.
You can clean your mouth with toothpaste and water swishing around and out without opening mouth very much.

If it is a gapeing cut, best to see a doctor. If it is like a paper cut the above should work.

My husband had something like that years ago and he finally went to the doctor when it wouldn't heal. The doctor said it was a vitamin deficiency, which I found hard to believe, but he began taking a multi-vitamin and within a few days he was much better and hasn't had the problem since. Good luck--I know it can really burn and sting!
