Lump on Muscle - this is scary

I have had a lump on my left side that appears to be in the muscle tissue. I have had an ultrasound which was unconclusive. I have no pain and it appears to not to have gotten any bigger in the past 2 months. Can this be anything other than muscle cancer? That seems to be the only conclusion that I can make when I do an internet search.

I hope you can help ease my fear.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

Hello Henpen

I am wondering as to exactly where on your left side you mean? A lump on a muscle can be various things. Yes, I know that as you researched, you probably did come across cancer as a possibility. Actually, I am a 11 year survivor of liposarcoma... rare cancer that devlops in soft tissue (muscle or fat). Is that what you read about?

Honey, statiscally, that lump would probably be more like a fatty tumor (these are just benign tunors and very common on all parts of the body. Or it could be the result of an injury.

My suggestion is that if the ultrasound was inconclusive, that you go back to your doctor and ask him to arrange a biopsy. The results of that could set your mind at ease and perhaps give you a better idea of exactly what it is.

If, by any small chance, it did show a sarcoma, please remember, I am proof that survival is a reality!

I am very glad you have posted on the Health Site here. It is a great source of information, personal stories and comfort for whatever might ail or worry us.

Tell your doctor strongly about your concerns and fears and ask him to arrange all the tests he can think of to rule out all the scary possibilities that he can. I can sure understand the worry and fear.

Hoping all good things

Hi henpen
I have to agree totally with everything reachout said. These lumps are almost always fatty tissue lumps. My Dad had a soft tissue sarcoma in his leg 3 yrs ago. His lump was painful and grew very quickly. I'm delighted to say he is now doing great, with no recurrences. However I remember the fear all too well, and it is vital that you get a biopsy, if only to put your mind at rest. Please go back to your doc and insist that this is done.

Wishing you well, please let us know how you get on. Mandy.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

Thank you for your posts.

I am very glad to know that there is a decent survival rate with these if it is cancerous. The untrasound indicated that the growth was not fatty and appeared to be connected to the muscle tissue. X-rays also indicated that it had not connected to the skeleton in any way.

The thing that is really confusing to me is that it does not appear to have grown any (or very little) in the three months that i have seen it and that it is not painful. I just wish that I could have found some other possiblilty to explain it away.

I don't blame you for being freaked out...since you're surrounded by some of the best medical facilities in the country, why not seek out a specialist at UNC Hospital or Duke Medical Center?

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

So, the lesson is...dont try to diagnose yourself via the internet. I went to the Doctor today and had a long discussion about this lump. It is not hard and seems to be muscle in texture, does not hurt and, most importantly, he is sure that it has not grown in the past week and maybe not in the past two months.

These are all indications that it is benign. However, we are going to have follow-up tests.

I am still scared, but now, its the kind of fear that you have when you get onto an airplane, your brain says its find, but your body is grabbing the door with all your might.

Hello again, this does sound like good news. I know just what you mean about the internet, great for info but sometimes too much info! Remember its much more likely to be a benign condition, hope we didn't scare you too much, that was never the intention. Wish you well, Mandy

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

The Dr. drew blood to check for some markers that would be present with muscle cancer and told me that he'd call only if he had bad news for me. (My heart stopped with every phone call today).

Well, he did not call, so either the results are negative or the Dr. forgot to call the lab to get my results. If he forgot to call, then, clearly, he thinks that I have little to worry about.

It was (is) the strangest thing, this lump. If I rest my arm on something over my head, like a shelf, I can make it almost disappear. Then, if I contract my muscle to lift it up, it becomes hard. I really think that I injured the muscle when I crashed during a mountain bike ride.

I also remembered that I had had physical therapy my back about one week before I first noticed the lump and I saw an opthopedic about two weeks before. Surely, if it were a growing mass, we would have noticed it then.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

If things continue to look good, then, I think that this scare was a good thing for me.

Faced with mortality, I really began to think about what is important to me, like my daughters and wife. I have become much calmer and feel a communion with God. I want to work hard to maintain these feelings.

Also, I found this board. It is a great source for information (like I have discovered for my wife who had a root canal this Tuesday and STILL has pain!). You can see, its been a crazy week for us.

Thanks all! You all were a good support for me. I hope that I will be able to support others for a while.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

I'm a soft-tissue tumor survivor as well (15 years). It sounds like you are fine. My lump grew very quickly and my doc removed it immediately. The good new is that if it hasn't spread, survival rates are pretty good. These tumors are very rare. Even my doc said 99.9999 percent of the time these lumps are benign. I'm just unlucky I guess. You sound like you are definately in the clear, but it can be scary. Life is stressful, we are all going to die someday, and try to enjoy yourself. DONT ****** SYMPTOMS!!!! Hee. That is a surefire way to think you are going to have cancer. Every symptom known to man can be a sign of cancer. It doesn't mean it is. Take care.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

Sorry for bumping this old thread.. but he got alot of help so i was curious.
I have a soft lump on my leg < of the shin Im 16 years old and about 155 lbs. I use to weight like 200 lbs and the bump seemed smaller. The bump if I push it in goes away and if i move a foot in a way it will dissapear as if I move it the other way it will bulge out. The Dr. told me that it was nothing wouldnt say wut. just said nothing and my mom thinks im a hypochondriact so i was wondering if you people could help me?

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

you could start your own thread on this (and probably should) but it may be a lipoma. It is a benign hardened fatty deposit. I get those. It's hard for me because I had a lump that was cancer, and several that are not. I will say, the cancerous lump grew very very quickly. The lipomas do not, though they do seem to be occuring more frequently due to age (I'm 31) and do get a little bit bigger.

Re: Lump on Muscle - this is scary

I have the same thing going on with me exactly as you have described. I went through a C-scan and that showed nothing out of place. Have you determined what is is yet? I'm going nuts trying to figure it out. Thanks. Dave
