Unhappy Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

I have a sharp pain on my right side under my rib cage, just below my breast. It started about a week ago, when I woke up. I didn't do anything, except sleep, no agrivations or injuries to it at all. I went to the doctor that day after work. They took a couple x-rays, and said that there was nothing found there, no broken bones no fluid in my lungs or anything. He said I must have bruised my ribs somehow. So I took the next day off and went back to work the day after. Well, that evening at about 10:30 the pain was so bad I couldn't harly breathe, so I went back to the ER. Well I got the same doctor, who was convinced I bruised my ribs, but he hooked me up to an IV gave me morphine, and took a bunch of blood and did a bunch of tests for liver, lungs, gallbladder (I had that removed already 3 years ago) and a few other things. He sent me home again. I toughed it out for a few days, and a few days ago I forced myself to take a really deep breath and something popped. It kept popping (alot lighter pop than the first) for about an hour and then the pain went away, after a week. Well then, yesterday it all repeated. The pain came back, when I woke up. No injury or anything. It is a constant pain that gets worse and sharper the deeper I breathe in. What could it be, does anyone have any idea?

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

Does it get worse after you eat?

This happened to me, not too long ago. I too was about to call 911 because I was in so much pain and the more I tried to breathe the more it hurt! I had blood tests, x-rays, the works done and NOTHING was found wrong. I'm certain I wasn't imagining it though! (They also told me I must have bruised my rib, but I know I didn't bump into anything.)

Search for gallstone symptoms on the web and see if your symptoms sound similar. If pain occurs a while after you eat, I bet that's what it is. (Although, my continued into the morning as well.)
(Supposedly fatter foods trigger this feeling, but that hasn't been the case for me... so who knows.)

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

Sounds like costochondritis to me. Popping the cartiledge (sp?) on the ribs. It's very painful, feels like broken ribs, but nothing will show up on xrays. The internet says it usually happens on the left side, but I've had it on both right and left sides. All because I moved wrong or twisted a little bit and the POP! and PAIN! Takes about 3 weeks to go away. Try ice. That sometimes works. It can also happen several times in a row.

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

I would have to tend to agree with liver up there, costochondritis IS very painful,my husband had this happen a few years ago and we thought it was some freaky heart attack or something, but all that checked out fine.

just try taking some sort of anti inflammatory like advil or aleeve and see if the pain changes.if it does,it is most likely inflammatory like with the costo,if it doesn't,well at least that has been ruled out and you can move onto other things.its just one of many possibilities.the others, one of very well could be adhesions as stated above,it takes a while for these to form, its basically scar tissue that can create problems anytime you have any sort of surgery.if the adhesions have attached themselves to or close to a nerve up there,it would cause very similar pain as to what you are having.just another possibility.there also could be some sort of a GI problem too.

all these things just need to be checked out thru your doc.he or she can refer you to the proper specialist and the right type of tests.obtaining a CT or MRI on that area would maybe help in possibly picking up some sort of finding there.just a thought.you are very obviously suffering from something and that needs to be found out.unfortunetly any real Dx of anything is kind of like playing detective, test and rule out or rule in.hopefully this wont take long and something will point you in the right direction.Good luck, and please let us know how things are going,K? Smile Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

Hi all.....
Thank you all so much for your help and support. Although they did more blood work and more x-rays, and a cat scan, they never really figured it out. They did say it wasn't my ribs though. They now believe it was either costochondritis or pleurisy. Either way, the pain has mostly subsided. It's still there very mildly, but I hope that will be completely gone soon. Thanks again....

Bethany

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

Glad to hear that Bethany.at least some things were ruled out anyways.sometimes there just isn't any real explanation for little and sometimes big pains.they pass and eventually you are fine.just part of the human body experience with its quirks and overall wierdness.if this should ever come back, well you know what to do.hopefully it has left for good.thanks for the update.FB

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

I have had sharp pain on my right side just below the rib cage, sometimes even moves to my left side. I had this pain now for about 10 years. I have seen so many doctors and specialists. At one time since I was in so much pain that I let them remove cyst, take my gallbladder, hysterectomy, repair my bladder, all at one time( several doctors did the surgery's).This was 5 years ago. I still have the same symptoms but now are worse and hurt more often. I can't sit without it hurting breath and it hurts eat and it hurts touch it and it hurts. I have gave up with the doctors they can't find out what is wrong so I quit going and learn to live with the pain, but sometimes it is very hard because the pain gets so intense. when I eat it is pure torture. If you have anything regarding this email or something.

Re: Sharp pain on my right side, what could it be?

I just had a question for ya sweetness.have they ever done an MRI on your c and T spine areas to see if that pain could be actually generating from the spinal area somewhere?when you run out of options going thru the front area, you just go to the back.its a matter of test and rule out when trying to find the cause of a particular pain.any number of different things can be going on within the spinal area that can actually cause anterior type symptoms.all of the nerves that innervate our anterior side all stem from the same spot in the back, the spinal column.they run from back to front,so quite frankly,it is entirely possible that your unidentified ten year long pain,'could' possibly be from a nerve issue or spine issue that is actually in the spinal column.it just really needs some evaluation at this point.i think you have exhausted all of the 'usual' suspects, now its time to go a bit further out of the box,ya know?i really would speak with your doc about obtaining an MRI on your upper and mid spine areas(c spine and thorasic)this just needs some looking into.believe me,you just have no idea what really is going on in any area of your body til you take a good look at it.

i have,as well as my son, found out things we both have inside our bodies, really BIG things, that we never knew even existed til they either showed themselves or they were an incidental finding on some sort of test.just freaky really.it needs looking into.good luck and i hope you eventually find that trigger.please keep us posted.FB
