Does MRI confirm need for fusion to repair a hernicated disk. My 37 year old daughter has a herniated disc (I believe the L5)and based on the MRI and in particular the pain symptoms is in her lower back, not her legs. They are recommending removing the disc and fusing. They will also do bone grapting from the hip and will not use artificial bone to lower any risk of the ability to get pregnant.

A spinal fusion is a big surgery with a long recovery time. Pop over to the back problems section of health boards and you'll see lots of fusion stories for a fuller picture.

I would recommend that your daughter get a second opinion and maybe even a third before committing to this surgery. If she really needs it, it will be well worth it, but she needs to be sure for her own peace of mind. I recommend seeing either an orthopedic spine specialist or a neurological spine specialist, and whoever it is should have a fellowship, too. They have the best experience.
