There is an increased risk of genetic disease. However, the risk isn't all that great, maybe 5%.
Up until very recently, most of the world's population lived in villages or tribes of less than 100 people, and married within them about half the time. Some cultures consider marriage between first cousins to be incestuous, others consider them normal. My own great-grandmother's parents, English country folk, were first cousins.
Relatives any closer than first cousins have a much higher chance of genetic disease, so don't do that!
