Golden ring gives a black skin, why?

Hi!
Whenever my wife rubs with her golden wedding ring over her skin, no matter where, the skin becomes dark black. When I do this with the same ring on my skin, nothing happens. Why is this?

hope someone can clear this up for me,

greetings from Sweden,

André,

I've heard of this before, it's either a true gold allergy which is rare but can run in families or the gold in the ring isn't pure and has been mixed with nickel. Nickel allergy is quite common.

An old wives tale says that if you get a black mark from gold it means you're iron deficient.

Re: Golden ring gives a black skin, why?

does the ring also turn black like on the inside where it touches her skin? just wondering. i used to work in a jewelry store shop where all the jobs from our other stores came in to have work done. we used to get a solid gold ring come in like every month or so that would turn black on the inside from some strange reaction from the person who wore it. this was a constant thing. we had the ring tested to make certain it was true pure 14 kt and it was solid. it was very strange to us,but for some reason, this mans wedding ring just created this type of reaction when his body was in contact with it. never did really know why. it was just his particular body chemistry that created this reaction. so we would clean it up,polish, and send it out, only to have it come back again like month after month. you may want to have your wife just go to her doc and have some labs run just to make certain all chemistrys are in order. asking a local jewelry store about whether or not THEY have seen this reaction too wouldn't hurt. you may get an answer. just a thought. you may have to ask a few different stores, but i am pretty sure they,at some point would have also seen this too?

just an FYI here for ya if she wants to wear her ring but has this problem. you can always coat the inside of her ring with clear nail polish. i have to do this with one of my rings that has a tendency to cause a skin break out whenever i wear it. i do think that one contains a bit of nickel silver in it tho. just a thought. if you happen to find out just why this is occuring,i would really love to know why. its always been a mystery now since the 80s when i kept seeing this. good luck, FB

Hi!
No, the ring itself stays normal gold, not black anywhere. Nor does the skin inside the ring. Only the outside of the ring makes the skin black.
I should mention that my wife had to take iron tablets from the doctor for a long time but is not taking them now any more, so maybe that tale of having to low iron in your system could be true.

Also, she takes tablets for her thyroid that doesn't work correctly, maybe this does something as well?

André

Re: Golden ring gives a black skin, why?

just when you think you have heard everything, huh? she really should see her doc about this. something having to do with her skin and what is at the surface(which would of course come from within the body) would most likely be the culprit. there must be "something' that is just not right with her overall chemistrys somewhere. that is just one heck of a crazy type of reaction to have just by touching the outside of that ring to the skin? good luck with finding the cause. please let me know if you find out,i REALLY would like to know what could possibly cause that. take care, FB
