Right Shoulder Blade Pain with Congestion

I have had a dull consistant pain under the right scapula. At times will turn to sharp pain. This will also make me feel as if right chest is congested. No cough, no breathing problems. Just feels like it is congested. I can push on my right chest area and feel the dull pain also. The pain is centered under the right scapula area. I have had x-rays in the chest area and found nothing.....twice. The dull pain in the scaplula area will go away at times, when it does so does the sensation of the right area of my chest being congested. I saw my family physcian and he stated the feeling in the chest area is arthritis and inflamed. I saw another doctor who stated it was bronchatis and gave me a Z pack of anti-biotics which did help, and once they wore off I was back to the same sensation of being congested and dull ache in right scapula area. Can anyone have any symptoms similar? My doctor is of no help at all. He did not prescribe anything, except an x-ray and when it came back negative had his secretary call me to tell me it was negative. I am 42, never smoked, 6'1" 225 pounds, not active in exercising but active in walking, working out doors. Legal Account Manager sitting at a desk many hours. Social drinker maybe 3-4 drinks per month. Never chewed tobacco, so relative healthy life style. Never had any illness except appendix taken out 15 years ago, tonsils when I was 4. Can anyone help me with a clue on this. I hope I am seeing maybe a area of inflamation of the scapula area from muscle tear and nothing serious. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Re: Right Shoulder Blade Pain with Congestion

when they did those x rays on you,did they happen to also just check out your spinal alignment within the c and t spine areas too? the type of pain you described and the intermittant nature of it just could be from some level of actual spinal affectation. getting an MRI done on the two areas i mentioned really would show any underlying issues down to the actual spinal cord. believe me, when the spine area is involved, it can show itself in some really odd ways. if there is even something like bone spurring or stenosis within one of the foramen that is what the nerves go thru from inside the cord to the outter areas? there could be pain and other strange symptoms. the most likely area of involvment if this is indeed some level of a spinal nerve issue would more than likely be at the very very low end of that c spine down to about t 3-4? areas?

when it comes to trying to really dx any real problem it more or less comes down to trying to track back symptoms to their source. and that just takes some testing of the more 'likely' areas that could create the specific types of symptoms. test and rule out or in? but i would at the very least here get that c and t spine MRIed. it is just a very common area that can produce anything from pain to total numbness and alot of really off the wall in between. if you are NOT having any problems at all with any pain running down your arm or any finger involvment either, that T spine would really be the place to look for a possible issue. once you get past that c 8 nerve, nothing beyond that actually innervates any parts of the hand itself. while you do not actually have a c 8 vertebrae, you most definitely DO have that c 8 nerve in there. but that is the very last hand/finger nerve.

just speak to your doc about that MRI. you are simply IN a diagnostic phase right now so all possibles need to be looked at. tho T spine problems are more rare than others simply because that particular area is much better supported and protected, it still can have some issues that would not actually show on any type of x ray. it just cannot get deep enough into where the cord and the nerves are located. that would take an MRI,with contrast is even better. please let me know how things go. good luck, FB

Re: Right Shoulder Blade Pain with Congestion

Thank you, and plan on doing just that, a MRI. The pain is not as bad as per say many I have talked to with some same symptoms. It is enough that makes my plan's for any day to be planned by what level of pain is in this area. It seem's the pain goes away at night when I lay down to sleep. When I wake up, the pain is not there, as the day progresses the pain seem's to start to come back. At night after a dose of over the counter back and body pain relieaver the pain subsides. Will bring with me the results that may help others from my doctor. Again thank you for your response.

Re: Right Shoulder Blade Pain with Congestion

no problem. i do hope the reason for your symptoms actually show themselves on the MRI. some things show really well and others don't. its just the true nature of any scan at all. they can get a bit better findings if the doc also orders this MRI WITH the use of a contrasting agent too. just ask him about a contrasted MRI. he knows what that is. let me know what you find out. good luck, FB
