Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

I'm a 24 year old girl who was walking the dog with my husband one night and found myself suddenly feeling really weak and "fuzzy," like my head was floating away from me. Upon returning home, I started shaking uncontrollably and the fuzziness felt like I was about to pass out. I also had a tightness in my chest that made it feel like I wasn't getting enough air. Not so much that I couldn't breathe, but enough to notice that it wasn't normal. I went to the ER and got all kinds of tests...an EKG, blood work, even a chest x-ray. Nothing showed up, other than my white blood cell count being slightly higher (but was the same result as an earlier test last year, so prob normal). They gave me a saline IV drip and had me drink potassium, and I felt 100% better when I left. I chalked it up to dehydration maybe. Vowed to drink lots of water.

A week later, I headed to Hawaii for a much-needed vacation. The second day, we went snorkeling and surfing, and I got a slight sunburn on my hairline. Didn't get back to have dinner until about 8:30 pm, but I had a full meal of shrimp pasta and bread. Had about two bites of carrot cake, then suddenly, wham! Fuzziness started again. Looking at the hanging lamp above the table made me feel really sick, and I broke out in a cold sweat. Drank lots of water, went home and slept. Woke up the next morning feeling exactly how I felt before I went to the ER last time. Was really worried! Family went to get the car to take me to ER again and I threw up...suddenly, symptoms GONE. Back to normal. Weak and tired, but not dizzy or nauseous or shaky. What the heck?

Pushed myself through the rest of the week, with symptoms coming on and off. Generally the most nauseous or lightheaded in morning or late night hours. Didn't feel like eating, but I tried and even made sure to drink breakfast shakes. Wondered if it could be my sinus allergies acting up? Took allergy meds and used Neti pot, seemed to help sometimes, other times still felt weak. All week I've had this tightness in my chest and just the general "something's wrong with me" feeling. Yes, I've had allergies (not the sneezing kind, more of the dizzy, congested sinus kind) and low blood sugar most of my life, but it's never hit me to this extreme before. This is two straight weeks of not feeling well, and ruining my vacation. I will be making an appointment with my MD now that I'm home (though I just moved, so this will be a brand new one), but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or can recommend what I should tell the doctor, or what tests I might need? Could this be allergy related? I usually take a dose of generic "multi-symptom allergy/sinus" meds every day...I've tried the Claritin or similar stuff, and it only raises my blood pressure til I hear ringing. Sinus type meds are the only thing that usually works. I don't know why this is suddenly hitting me like this every day. I thought the first time was just an isolated incident, but I realize now that I've felt pretty icky since then, just in varying levels.

It could be allergies. They can really play havoc with your body. Anxiety can cause the symptoms to be worse, so try not to panic when you get the "fuzzy" feeling. You might have an inner ear virus. Have you had a pregnancy test? Could that be a posssibility? I wish you well.

Definitely NOT pregnant. That's the first thing they checked at the ER, haha! I do think it could be allergies or sinus symptoms, as using a Neti pot seems to help with some of the dizziness. However, I'm not able to get a dr. appointment for the next two weeks, and you need a referral through my medical provider to see an allergist. I don't want to have to wait another two weeks after the first appointment; I can hardly stand to wait for that one! It's a scary feeling. Does anyone know how you get into an ENT or allergist quickly? Can you go to one outside of your medical provider? I've never seen one.

Re: Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

UPDATE: I was able to see a doctor a few days ago, and he also thinks it's sinus related and that the scary episodes might have had a migraine attack in them, too. I was given Claritin and a steroid nasal spray to take, and since I've tried them, at least the dizziness has gone away and I seem to be a little more "present." That's good. The part that HASN'T gone away or been affected at all in the past 3 weeks is my chest feeling pressure/tightness and a shortness of breath. They did another EKG and said it isn't my heart, and they also didn't hear any fluid in the lungs. Is there another test anyone can recommend that might show what's causing this?

Also, I've STILL been nauseous every day until late afternoon. If I eat anything, I can only manage a few bites without feeling like throwing up. I usually am able to eat dinner just fine, oddly enough. Yesterday even the smell of my husband's breakfast burrito made me lose it. Yes, I know, it sounds like morning sickness, but again, they already checked that twice and I'm not. I'm surviving on Slim Fast shakes, but I know that can't be good for my body. And I'm tired of it, literally every day! Anyone had experience with this?

Re: Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

I am having similar issues. I get nausea almost every day. I am extremely tired. I get weird fizzle sounds in the back of my head/neck lately (that is new). I have trouble breathing and shortness or breath I get very lightheaded. I also went to the ER once for trouble breathing and the bloodtest also showed just elevated white blood cells, and they suggested it could be some sort of virus. I got saline and potassium as well and felt better. But it keeps coming back. I also feel constriction in my thought and nose. I got some nasal spray, and it helps a little with the breathing, but I want to know what all these symptoms are and what is going on with me. I just feel crappy everyday. Symptoms are worse in the morning and I night. I also yawn a lot and sometimes have trouble speaking because I feel so short of breath. Any ideas anyone?

Glad to know I'm not alone! These boards seem to be a mixture of comforting me (knowing others are going through it) and scaring me to death (seeing that no one's found answers...sometimes for years!). I'm seeing another doctor today, so I'm going to do my best to make sure he really checks me out other than just saying, "well, the tests are normal. Take care!" It sounds crazy, but I almost don't care if it's even a bad diagnosis as long as I get one and know what to treat! I really just want an answer, because something's obviously wrong, and it's not going away on its own. Sigh.

I know what you mean. I read through these posts and it seems like no one ever gets any help. Let me know if this doctor helps you at all. I want to know what tests I should get becuase I've been to so many doctors with no help.

OK, I may have found part of the answer! I was getting that immense pressure in the chest area and shortness of breath (it was making me so sad to not be able to sing along to the radio, even!) for a constant 3 weeks. One day, I burped....and the pressure felt slightly better! So I purposely tried to make myself burp more, and sure enough, it helped. This started me realizing that the pressure and shortness of breath could actually be symptoms of GERD! Researching it, I saw that the buildup of stomach acid and gasses can feel like a heart attack, and causes pressure. It even can cause sinus issues, because your head produces extra mucus to combat the gases coming up, to protect it. Wow! I had nooo idea. The doctors NEVER mentioned that it could be something so simple. I never thought of it either, because I've never had stomach issues in the past, maybe had heartburn once. It didn't feel like that, but it was a stronger type...when your esophagus is inflamed, it can hit nerves in your chest. I tried taking Rolaids (the multi-symptom kind for heartburn and gas) every time I ate for the next few days, and I now can breathe normally again..no pain or pressure! Went back to the doc and presented him with all this, and he said, wow, ok, lets put you on Pepsid. The nausea has since gone; I can eat again!

Since I posted last, I've had more blood work and CT scans, all normal. I'm feeling sooo much better. The dizziness has gone away for the most part with the Claritin and nasal spray, but I'm still going to see an allergist to find out more about that, because pressure changes and bright lights also bother me a lot. Oh, and one more thing...I had my eyes checked last year and only wear glasses for my computer, but on a hunch, I went and had them checked again last week...and yep, I need glasses! It's a really small prescription, but things have seemed a little fuzzy, like words on the TV, so I'll need to wear them occasionally and while driving. It should help some of the headaches and dizziness, too!

Amyjorgie, I really hope some of this info can help you, too...try taking some OTC acid reflux stuff and see if it makes any difference with your breathing...you may be surprised!

I think you should be tested for Lyme Disease, sounds like what I've been going through for years after Lyme.

I have experianced this very same thing for months. It ended up being due to anxiety. I had to make life changes. Anxiety can majorly effect your body in ways you could never imagine. What do you do for a living?

I have been on Ativan on and off for many years, it does help but it's not the answer. I think anxiety is the diagnosis for what they can't find. I am a customer service rep but had this feeling when I was put on Antibiotics for Lyme and I get it often even when I take the Ativan, thanks for your input I really appreciate it.

Re: Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not anxiety either. My husband is a psychologist, and he knows that I'M the calm-headed one most of the time! I'm sure when it gets really bad, anxiety adds to it in a type of panic attack way, but the anxiety is CAUSED by the symptoms. I haven't had another episode again lately, but I'm going to try and take my migraine meds, Maxalt, next time it happens and see if it makes a difference...am suspecting it may be a form of that. Will also be seeing an allergy specialist on Tuesday to find out what I'm allergic to and maybe rule out or in allergies playing a problem. On that note, if any of you are allergy sufferers or have migraines triggered by dust, I just got this amazing vaccum/air purifier thing called the Rainbow. It's pretty expensive, but great because it uses water rather than dusty bags or containers, so you never handle the icky stuff it picks up. Look into it; I was shocked at how much dust and pet hair was in my apartment and on my mattress. I'm hoping it'll make a difference in my health now!

Re: Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

How do I get tested for Lyme disease? Is it a blood test. I think they did just a blood test and didn't find any Lyme, butmI heard that sometimes the test shows negative when you actuallly do have the disease. What kind of test do you recommend?

Re: Dizzy, weak, tight chest...what's up?

Doesn't sound like anxiety. Most people are decently aware that they have anxiety... You should get checked for Lyme's disease. I'm not sure but hopefully it gets better.
