i keep getting electrical static shocks :( PLEASE HELP ME

have you ever gone to touch someone and you get/give a little shock? ...well this is not that, it's much worse! :( as winter has brought drier air, my same environment at home (same material upholstery on the chair i sit in, same blankets in bedroom, rugs, etc.), i am getting NUMEROUS, BAD SHOCKS per day where i see sparks come off my fingers and in the dark, the shocks light up the area around me.

here are some things i have tried so far:

* using a humidifier in isolated rooms and keeping water steaming on my kitchen stove (which is NOT SAFE and i don't want to do), and
* rubbing down my chair with anti-static dryer sheets (the only thing i haven't been able to do is anti-static spray - can't get a hold of it, am concerned about the chemicals in it, and couldn't spray it over enough fo the areas necessary)

do you think there's nothing that can be done? i can't live like this... :*(

Hey,

I know you have mentioned loads of things but have you tried out your clothing types?
I know for a fact that certain shoes i own can give me shocks. I own a pair of uggs and when i was walking around the house on carpets it was fine, but when i touched a light-switch or even the blinds i got a shock.

Try changing your footwear and some clothing which can (even though with protection) cause static.

Best of Luck

Wear a thimble on your finger so that you can discharge the static painlessly. I used to carry a big landscape spike around with me. I called it the "de-shockifier". The humidity is higher in my house now so it's not a problem anymore.

Try to wear clothes made of natural fibers instead of synthetics. Change your shoes. Wear leather shoes if possible. They even have special shoes that you can buy called "electro static dissipative" shoes. Use anti-static sprays on your carpet or make your own by diluting fabric softener in water.

thanks so much for your help, letitgo (i like your name) and esker and ...i swear i was going to mention this but then i thought i wrote so much as it was that i shouldn't write more - i was going to tell u that i doooo wear cotton clothes (right now a tshirt and jeans) and my sneakers (though they're old now and this benefit may have faded away), i didn't buy them for this at the time but i remember they even claim to have a technology called "x-static" that is supposed to help with static (again, don't know if that may have faded away). ... :(

the thimble idea is something i wouldn't have thought of but, is that for real? please don't make a joke out of me, i could get really harmed and i'm worried that something metal (a thimble) would only make it worse...

okay ...thanks for pitching in and, god bless~

Hey,

(Thanks for name compliment haha!)
I would advise you do get new shoes/trainers because even though they are made for this I know some trainers can cause me to get electric shocks, it all depends how you walk with your feet. Try not to scuff your feet across the floor, take proper steps.
Plus i could be wrong here but im sure that even though trainers are advised Im sure if they are old and worn down they can have the opposite effect?!
Let me know how u get on, please!
x

No, it's really true! Use any piece of conductive metal. The spark hurts when it comes off your body. If you can make it come off through a piece metal in between you and the spark, then it won't hurt. A thimble is just something that you can wear instead of having to remember to pick up a steel spike like I was doing.

Re: i keep getting electrical static shocks :( PLEASE HELP ME

Let us know if any of these remedies help because I have gotten shocked so many times I feel like I am being electrocuted. Especially in a grocery store ohmygosh! I even zapped my land line telephone so bad when I answered it it stopped the hand set from working...I did that a few times. For me it depends on the winter...some winters it is extreme and a couple not so bad but I tired all kinds of strange things so let us know what works for you(dragging a copper wire outside my tennis shoes didn't ground me I can tell you that much.
