This is my first time posting here. Looks like a great place to discuss health issues. I'm hoping you folks might be able to provide some advice. I hope I'm posting this question in the right place.
I'm 30 years old and have been dealing with a stomach ache for the past 3 years (on and off). One day it appeared out of the blue and has been with me ever since. I've been to see my doctor on several occasions and she believes it's a case of acid reflux brought on by stress. She suggested I lose some weight and eat healthy. I'm 6'1" and 265 lbs. I don't look overweight but I know I need to lose the pounds. I've done a lot of reading on the subject of acid reflux and I'm not sure that Acid reflux is causing all my problems. I'm wondering if maybe it's a stress-related problem but not the acid reflux?. Could it be possible it's being misdiagnosed?. The doctor seems to think my acid reflux is caused by stress in my life. I've also got type 2 diabetes and hemochromatosis. Both are being treated and are under control (thankfully!)
About 2 years ago I went in for a test where I had to drink a salty solution while being x-rayed. They said I had a mild case of Acid Reflux. I went on several different types of medication before finally being prescribed prevacid. None of these pills did much to help. Last year I went to the hospital and had a camera put down my throat and into my stomach. The specialist didn't find any ulcers or any other problems. Although, he did mention that something looked a little scratchy (stomach?). I can't remember. He didn't seem too concerned and didn't offer any solution other than suggesting I watch the types of foods I'm eating and to continue taking medication.
The stomach ache is difficult to describe. It's not something that happens everyday. Usually I feel the discomfort around my belly button area. The pain isn't to the point that I require painkillers but it does make me feel really uncomfortable. I guess you could compare it having a tight belt on or being punched in the stomach. Not very pleasant when you're trying to do work.
I should point out a few things...
-The stomach ache is usually gone by the time I'm ready for bed.
- I NEVER feel this stomach ache when sleeping.
-When I wake up the following morning... I always feel excellent.
-Usually when I'm at home and away from my place of employment, I rarely feel the ache. Coincidence?
-No problems going to the bathroom
-No changes in my appearance or appetite.
-I don't smoke or drink
Food doesn't seem to bother me... although I've noticed that tea sometimes make it worse when the ache exists (coffee doesn't seem as bad).
It's been suggested that a lot of my problems is stress related. This could be possible because I have endured a lot of nonsense and harassment from my bosses. I do tend to let things bother me and go home thinking about it. This is usually when I notice the ache getting worse. Sometimes when I've got a busy schedule and lots of things happening in my life, sometimes it can flare up.
I was away from work for 7 weeks because of a strike and I felt 100% better. I went 6 full months without a single problem with my stomach. That's the longest I've ever gone. But then it reappeared after Christmas and I believe it's because of some problems I was dealing with at work.
I'm sorry for the long story. I'm just getting frustrated and wish I could put this problem to rest once and for all. I'm not sure what else can be done. I'd like to live a long and healthy life... but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank-you.
