I am an 18 year old female that has struggled with knee pain for about a year and a half. I went to the rheumatologist and he didn't know what was wrong. My ASO titer was continually elevated but he said that once you have strep, your ASO will always be elevated. My doctor was afraid of rheumatic fever so I had an EKG and ECG done to ensure there wasn't any heart valve damage. My question is this - why do I have knee pain? It isn't always constant. I can go a few weeks without having that bad of pain, then one week my knees will hurt really bad. They pop more when they are sore and they have fluid in them at times. I haven't noticed my knees being red or hot. If you have any ideas, please let me know!
When it first started a year and a half ago were your knees red, swollen or hot? Even briefly? If you did have an inflammatory reaction to an infection, it could have caused permanent damage resulting in osteoarthritis.
Have you had any knee x-rays done?
